Raccoon trapping

Raccoon 13 and Possum 3 down. Both were trapped outside the front door by the chickens. There are so many on our game cameras that I am getting depressed!

Trapping/snare results this winter:

28 coon
5 possum
3 skunk
4 coyote
1 bobcat

What kind of traps are you using?

We had some cuffs for coon.
Set some snares for coyote and bobcat.
And a couple 220 conibear bucket sets for bobcat where we caught the skunk and opossum.

I will be starting on the raccoons up north soon, but right now it's the squirrels at home that I'm after. The insulation/blanket around my truck battery has been getting ripped up. Paw prints on top of engine. Relocating a few before they start chewing on wires.

I am going to hit the coons, possums and skunks for a bit here in another couple weeks. Need to try calling some coyotes they have been howling up a storm at sundown the last few days. Would set some foot holds but sure as crap I will catch a bobcat and then have to release it, that is never an enjoyable experience.

People underestimate the damage squirrels can do. Squirrels got into the intake and stored nuts in my wife’s Mini Cooper. When she stated the car, the nut shells got into the cylinders and ruined the engine when the car was 3 years old. They also ruined the wiring harness and seats on my F150 work truck. That same year squirrels got into the main electrical panel at our church—we lost electric for almost a week due to the damage (and this was a new building!).

They knocked out the fiber internet lines on our block twice last summer. We are in an older suburban neighborhood with no shortage of mature trees and bird feeders. Removed six already with a cage under my truck in just the last couple days.

One more coon today, so the tally is 14 coons, 3 possums. I still don't have the coon that keeps coming on our porch. Also got a stray cat (in the cage trap) that was not too happy. She was released without harm.

Crazy the differences by location. In NY most of the trapping seasons closed Feb 15. (some sooner, a couple a little later)

Landowners in WI can trap year round for certain species.

I think some states have recognized a need to change regulations as other factors change. There likely wouldn't be a need to allow year round trapping if a pelt brought $50/coon.

Missouri has a Private Land Extension that extends trapping season on private land from March 1 to April 14. Regular season ended Feb 28. We can also get permission from our conservation department (which I have done) to trap critters that are harassing or killing livestock, such as our chickens.

That is the furbearer season so that it coincides with primeness of the pelts. I believe…… that you can remove nuisance wildlife from your own property at any time except for bear and deer.

I doubt the DEC would consider racoons doing racoon things in the woods a nuisance or destructive.

KS thinks coons doing coon things in the woods is destructive to other animals and has lengthen seasons to try to curb their populations. Beyond habitat managers and guys that like to trap just to trap I don't really see much changing overall.

"He said that the escalating population of raccoons in Kansas adversely affects birds such as turkeys and quails."

“And the population of raccoons is thought by some to be having a detrimental impact on some species either indirectly as a disease vector. Particularly, I’ve brought up in the past, canine distemper impacting gray fox populations potentially being maintained by raccoons.”

I bought a half dozen coon traps this year, but never set one. As a young father I don't have a lot of spare time to fuss with them and I would feel horrible just digging a hole to throw carcasses in. I guess if that is beneficial to the ecosystem as a whole, I would. What are you guys doing with the carcasses? Will someone buy a whole recently deceased coon or 30?

T-Max, The short answer to your question is No. The entire problem is that they’re not worth anything for the effort involved in putting up the fur. Mostly they’re getting chucked into the bushes as worm food

When I was a kid a coon pelt brought $25-$30. It was great money. Then people started throwing red paint on movie stars and the market tanked. Now you can't hardly give them away even to China or Russa. Might be able to make some money if you find a skull buyer.

I trap for fun and to help keep the population down (lots of things benefit from lower coon populations). But I get to feeling bad about the waste too and start throwing them under fruit trees for fertilizer. If they land inside your cages the bones don't get scattered around and make a mess. I've also made some Hugel gardens with them.

I could just dig a pit and chuck them in it every time I check traps. Maybe throw a couple arrowheads and pieces of a broken plate so an archaeologist sometime in the distant future can get a PhD trying to figure out what went on there... 😂
