Propogating red dogwood

Those are huge dogwoods for year two. Were they transplants or cuttings?

They are 4 years in the ground. Some were bare root, some were transplanted from potted cuttings.

The first two years they grew normally but the past two they have leafed out and died back. Last year was very dry so I chalked it up to drought. This year we’ve had a lot of rain and everything is lush except my dogwoods.

What part of the country are you in? Is ROD native to that area?

I’m in Pennsylvania and ROD is a native plant here but not particularly common in my area.

I'm puzzled. You might just need to chuck that idea in the bin and move on. Last thing I'd look at is, what other plants are growing around them where they're dying. Those plants/trees can be an indicator of what is going on in your soil.

Look at pics of dogwood anthracnose and compare to your plants.

Any chance you've used herbicide around the dogwoods?

The area is a low meadow with a confluence of two small creeks where I’ve also planted button bush and elderberry, both are thriving. I’ve been clearing much of what was already growing there. Asian bush honeysuckle, black walnuts, red maple, multi floral rose, spice bush and various broadleaf weeds and grasses.

I’d say it has something to do with the walnut trees. Probably took the 2 years for the roots to grow enough to start interacting with the walnut tree roots. At my old place anything that didn’t like jugalone would act like that( grow great for a bit and then start dying off).

I sprayed prowl, simazine, and oust around them in March while they were dormant.

Between 15 and 100 feet
Juglone is reported to be toxic to plants out to the crown of the walnut but others state that anywhere the leaves drop could also be affected.
Might just be a failed experiment in that location. I have several acre walnut grove and about the only thing that thrives around them is gooseberry (MN).

Did you plant any ROD at the same time in areas that weren't sprayed or in areas not close to walnuts? I'm just wondering how those shrubs are faring compared to the ones that are sprayed or are closer to walnuts.

I have a few spots where the clay is too heavy, or its too close to the shale bed line.

Places I have tried to get something to grow 2 times, the third time I bing in decent soil to that spot. Sometimes, it might just runt out to where the soil is decent. Sometimes just needed some decent soil to get established.

Look at this.

Might be time for a decent soil sample. Iron could be amnded with milogranite. Common to get at a lawn n gardne store.

Not enoug of a nutrient could be another nutrient is there way too much blocking uptake.

Any knowns about your soil, used to be this or that at the location? Any other plant / tree/ shrub issues there? A certain prevalent weed or shrub or tree unique to the area? Sometime something flourishes in a habitat because other plants will not thrive.

Blck walnuts are nasty buggers for habitat. Supposedly deer do not eat the nuts too. Something makes them disappear at my home, hoping to remember to put a trail camera up this august / sept.
