I was talking to a neighbor that is a retired teacher and said he buried ~$2k in a coffee can and about 5 years later some of the bills were deteriorated so much that he ended up losing a couple hundred of it.

When I sold volume aluminum......there was a time each winter when the price would dip and we had one big-time buyer that would always put the screws to his metal suppliers on the prices (actually we had a few of these guys). They would drive a very hard bargain....and would get some pretty low prices as most companies would trip over themselves to keep the production lines running. We'd always take a part of the action and would ship in the winter at those low prices....just to stay busy. But when summer rolled around and business was brisk....those guys could not get any product on a timely basis....despite the contract prices and all the whining they would do.
Why? We could ship to other customers and make a profit. The low price boys had to wait.....and we had all kinds of stipulations in our price agreement - in the fine print. ;) Siome did not like it.....but it was the other side of the "hard-ball" deal: Delivery. Some finally learned that everyone had to make a little profit and that you could get product if the price was at fair-market levels. :D The hard-ball game can work both ways. ;)

Ha! He was actually a pretty good teacher for history, geography, social studies. And he was a bit crazy which kept kids in line. They also made 9th graders watch a birthing video for health class/sex ed and had him sub that day and he provided commentary and personal experiences about his ex-wife. The things they get away with in small towns.
