My buddy collected samples for me and I set them out to dry today. Very interesting to see them all side by side. Here are 3 samples with their histories:
The one on the left is from an older logging deck area that is on a slope. I have never been able to get any good growth there until this year. Will probably get a load of amendment on it this year.
The middle one was also hard pack red clay logging deck. I disked it about 4 years ago to get some plantings started. Has had only 4 years of annual clover/oats that remained fallow until the fall. Min till for 3 years, none last year. Spraying as needed and letting organic debris rot.
Right one is from the first plot I did, and have done every year for 15 years. Did disc and even roto tilled in the early days, but min disturbance for 5 years. Always green stuff thick year round, food or weeds. Can't wait to get the tests back but the eye test says a lot.
