Plot Advice

Wondering what you would due in this situation.

Tilled my rye and clover under this spring. Planted sorghum. Went to spray it today and it looks like a bust. Not sure if the seed was bad or what.

The clovers is kinda coming back but the plot is full of thistle.

Was thinking maybe spray it with 24db and just letting the clover come back and then nuking in the fall with roundup and going with radish and rye again this fall. And trying sorghum again next spring.

Is there anything I could be missing as far as a summer option.

Would have to be throw and grow.

1Acre.

If you need food for your deer I would go with something quick and easy like buckwheat or sunflower. Then go with something that combats soil compaction this fall, like your plan of radish and rye.

If you don't need a summer food source I would let the thistle do its thing, which is fighting compaction. And then spray it when it flowers, before it makes seed. The clover may be enough to keep your deer happy in the meantime.

Isn't it still a bit early for sorghum up there?

Look at green covers website. They have just about every summer plot option over there.

Some foodplot weeds can be controlled decently with mowing, not sure about thistle. A weed wiper is an option too. Spreads roundup on what it touches. Hits the high weeds and leaves the desired down below the bar alone.

Could spruce up the clover plot with some medium red. Mine is almost 2 feet tall creeping up among the wheat and rye.

ID the thistle to find out what type. See if its on the list of controlled weeds on 2,4db. Cethodim is an option too if you also have grass issues.

Yeah slightly,

Had a good rain window. Ended up with 3 in. And was scheduled to be hiking for the next 2 weeks so it was a now or never type thing in the moment.

Had been 80s everyday, but the Temps plummeted so I'm guessing that's what caused my germination issues.

Could be. I had a similar problem a few years ago. Harrowed and planted before a big rain storm. It rained off and on for a few days and the temperature dropped. I got a little bit of clover but not much else. It was a great year for mushrooms, though.

cowpeas or buckweheat......

Watch the weeds, let them provide nutrients. Kill them before they make viable seed. Thats my overall summer plan at camp. My old enemy, now my friend is golden rod. Letthe plot do what it does best, then steer it cold season grass time. Clover sit in the background until the spring.........
