Planting Blackberries

Has anybody ever planted wild blackberries by picking some berries, letting them dry out, and then burying the small seeds in a good location ?? I picked a couple big handfuls and dried them. Thinking of planting them in our new cut area. Is this feasible ?? When should they be planted - now or in the spring ?? All input welcome.

I would think they could be planted now because that is when momma nature would plant them. My guess is the seeds stay viable for years. The one acre deep woods plot I cleared this spring has black berries popping up all over. I can only imagine it took years of random seeds getting dropped from the trees to have that many come up in one area.

Agree with the above. I've mowed blackberry brambles on the edge of an opening (scattering seeds everywhere) and seen completely new plants pop up further into the opening the next growing season. Between seedy bird turds and mowing, could probably make the whole opening blackberries within a few years if you wanted to.

Spreading dried berries...same outcome.

I thought the same, but had never done it. We don't have any blackberries anywhere near the newer cut area, so - being impatient - I thought I'd import some seed !!! Across our mountain, there's a sea of blackberries where the state had done a timber sale. They put up a deer exclusion fence and it's loaded with blackberries ( and gobs of new trees / shrubs. ). So - I've got seed !!

Thanks for input guys. ^^^^^^^^^

I love having blackberry except when it invades NWSG fields. Next spring I will need to do some spot spraying. It greens up early before the NWSGs so it is easy to see. I generally just drive through the fields with my pickup and a spray tank in the bed and do a drive by shooting where it's needed.

I hope you get what you are looking for!
