Planting apple trees on a mound

Somewhere I read that the trees should be planted on the side or edge of the mound. Can someone explain why?

I believe I read it on a Facebook group page but can’t find it.

I found the link. Use a dome shaped mound and best to not plant on the very top as erosion can expose the roots.

M7 rootstocks don't like wet roots, so planting on a mound would protect from standing in water in Springtime.

For better or worse, I have planted a ton of them on a mound. Here are my observations and concerns. First, they grow really really well. I dig a hole that is nearly as big as if I were not going to use a mound, bring in good top soil with tractor bucket and add to hole with existing dirt removed and plant tree in a mound. My mounds are all probably 8-12 inches above the surface line. It works darn well. A concern expressed by others when I first did it was whether the roots would anchor well enough. In the short term (less than 10 years) I do think that is a concern. In the long term, I don’t think it will be. I have helped support my trees with T-Posts.

How big of a diameter mound do you build?

Ben told me years ago to run a plow blade to make a mound line. I would not do it again as it’s tough to cut grass around them but the trees are doing great so that’s the trade off
