For better or worse, I have planted a ton of them on a mound. Here are my observations and concerns. First, they grow really really well. I dig a hole that is nearly as big as if I were not going to use a mound, bring in good top soil with tractor bucket and add to hole with existing dirt removed and plant tree in a mound. My mounds are all probably 8-12 inches above the surface line. It works darn well. A concern expressed by others when I first did it was whether the roots would anchor well enough. In the short term (less than 10 years) I do think that is a concern. In the long term, I don’t think it will be. I have helped support my trees with T-Posts.
