Pictures of almost 40 years after pine tree planting

We bought this farm almost 40 years ago and planted two small fields to pine tree. Two rows of Jack pines were inter spurred with two rows or more of Norway (red) pine.

Over time I did cut a few rows of jacks out. I am a bit south of the normal Jack pine range. Soils are light and the jacks are dying except for an area on a slight north slope.

Regrowth under the dead jacks looks ok.

I just left the Jack pine lay for cover.

I have never enjoyed a camp fire anyway.

That re-growth looks like a great place for deer to bed in - or back up against while they watch outward. Good browsing too.

I suspect the same thing but didn’t walk far in there. These two fields were very narrow and not farmable with any modern equipment. Equipment is much bigger now.

I wouldn't walk in there to far either. Looks like a lot of thorns!

Are the blue spruce losing lower limbs?

The white and black spruce we planted have lost anything green on lower limbs. A severe winter, three years back led to much growth being stripped.

Bur absolutely lost lower limbs on the blues. My Norway spruce are so much better

I believe there's a fungal disease affecting blue spruce around the country. Any blue spruce around here seem to be dying of it, or are already dead. Needles turn rusty-brown / brown, then the tree's done. Very, very few even try to plant blue spruce here anymore. Norway & white spruce - folks plant those here. Shame blue spruce are having troubles.
