Pears

Rootstock effect time to bear for pears? I imagine they might. Also, with asian pears, can they use euroean pears to cross polinate. Was leaning towards one more pear at home.

That's sad to read. How big did the trees get? Can't some pears take 10 years to produce?
I have several pear trees I purchased from SLN and they are doing great. I have these planted at my place in SE MN and I believe I planted them in 2013 or 2014. The Beierschmidt pear is a great tree for people to eat and it tastes just as good as a standard store bought pear.

I have two other pears that are also pretty decent, but Beierschmidt is definitely the best of the 3. They tend to drop fruit in September/October when natural food is abundant, so apples may be a better option for wildlife than pears in my opinion.

Some has to do with variety also, all my Asians and a couple other varieties fruited pretty quick. Most of OH97 that I've grafted to start producing around year eight, I am in Zone 6A.
Yes, European pears will pollinate Asian pears fine.

We have a couple Kieffer pears and a Morse Hybrid pear at camp. It took about 7 years to get our first fruits on them, but they produce well each year now - barring any late frosts killing blossoms. The Morse hybrid produces a lot of fruit that are round, and are a little bit smaller than a billiard ball. Don't know if Morse is still in business or if they still sell them. It's a good tree for us - as are the Kieffers.

How late do Kieffers drop up there?

How was year two for your pears. Mine seem to do well in 2023 far as growth, this year not so hot. Maybe both put on 6 inches vs 2 feet the year before. Leaves looked a bit sickly. Not sure if I have to treat for a disease. Kieffer and bartlett on a semi-standard rootstock. Unknown rootstock though.

They have never had any blossoms. They are probably about 15 ft tall. I’ll give them some more time. The SNL Wolfrivers planted the same year just started bearing fruit this past year.

Start in late September, and drop slowly in October. Had just a couple still hanging into early November. Our Kieffers are located in a gently-sloping, south-facing field - tons of sun, well-drained soil. They seem to get fairly big too.

If you're talking about SLN's Wolf River apple trees (never heard of Wolf River pears?) - wait until you see how those babies produce!!! Ours are in year 3 of production and they were loaded with BIG apples. Antonovka rootstock on them.

Yes the Wolf River apples same rootstock as yours. Can’t wait for them to really pop.

Pears are incredible here and I love them. Only two issues:
1. Seldom produce in a frost pocket
2. All of my varieties drop before our gun season starts (Kieffer might go into early gun season some years). Hoping my Blue Hill pears are later dropping down here. Too young to tell yet.

Was pretty surprised home depot had semi-standard wolf river apple trees for sale. Was pretty tempted.

Bluehill says the korean giant drops even later than kieffer. Olympic is another name for korean giant as per several other nurseries. Not familiar with bloom groups on pears, but cummins says its bloom group 3. Might help with frosts. They also said its very fireglight resistant too..

I'm taking a 2nd attempt at northrup mulberry. This year I am buying 2 grafted ones and stealing some scion off of them for another 2 trees. Not many places have mulberry, but one I have an order in aslo has that olympic pear on onx87 and 97 rootstock. Think im trying the 87'. Hopefully goo on heavier clay.

Buckle up. Ours are going crazy with BIG apples. Before I bought ours, I had read some reviews on how they make big crops on Antonovka roots (can't remember where I read those). But it seems from our WR trees, those reviews were spot-on. Glad we planted them!
