Pear tree pollination timing

Maddog66

5 year old buck +
About 5 years ago I planted 2 different zone 3/4 pears in my apple orchard and they’ve thrived (3 year old bare root). Far better growth on them than some apples I planted at the same time. What I overlooked when I planted them is their bloom timing.

Not that I’ve wanted them to set fruit this young……but they have both bloomed like crazy the last 3 years. One of them consistently blooms real early and the other late. No crossover at all! Since neither of them have ever set a single fruit, I further assume there aren’t any other appropriate pear trees in my neighborhood and I’m on my own.

So, is there a pear variety out there that is known as a great pollinator, like some crabs are known to be? Maybe I just need to plant a 3rd variety that’s known as a mid-season pollinator? Maybe my trees need more age to know for sure? Maybe on the ‘right’ spring weather my current 2 trees will have some overlap in bloom time? Any advice?

I’m in far N Wisconsin and I’d like to try to address this issue when the frost goes out (mid June this year??😂😂).

There are so many variables like European or Asian or Triploid so maybe tough to find the perfect pollinator for both varieties. I think it would be money well spent to research what pear pollinates each variety that you own and then buy a new tree for each of your trees. Sounds like to me it would be worth it and I would predict bushels of pears very soon because in my experience a hand full of blooms on a young tree can make a big difference pollinating others.

Thanks!

I just found where I keep my trees recorded and I have a PARKER and an EARLY GOLD.

Early Gold is reportedly self pollinating. You might have other factors in play here like late frost.

He is your man for pear info in your part of the world. He doesn't get on here as often as he used to but maybe if you DM him it will hit his email.

I read somewhere that if you place straw bales around an early blooming tree that it insulates the ground from early warmup and delays blooming. Never tried it though so don’t know if it works or not.

Get an Ure pear tree.

Thanks Telemark, I’ll look it up!

My wife and I were out in the orchard today and she picked out the spot.

I have 2 fairly local places in N Wi I buy BR trees from. Both have been great for me. Granvdview nursery near Antigo, and Winter Greenhouse, in Winter. I’m going to see what they have and report back.

Any other good local nurseries I don’t know about?
