Peach Preferences?

We have some good size peach orchards around here but i'm not familiar with varieties. What kinds do you guys prefer to eat? I know the deer love them here. Curious as to your experiences?

Canned in heavy syrup.;) At least before I was diabetic.:(

We were just talking about this on a fruit growers forum this a.m.. Sounds like the MI peach crop might be a complete bust this year, even to the extent of tree die back. I know parts of MI are in the "bannna belt" :D, but peaches are not a extremely cold hardy crop. There are a limited number of cold tolerant varities, but even those tend to be very hit and miss on fruit production.

Personally I would never look at them as a worthwhile wildlife investment if you live north of zone 6.

Well i'd mostly just like to plant 1 at my house for consumption. Also at another hunting property we have a spot that is called Peach Hill for no other reason then thats what the original homesteaders called in in the 1800s. I thought it would be nice to add 2-3 peach trees on that hill for posterity.

Some of the more cold hardy peaches with a track record are Red Haven, Contender, Harrow Diamond, Reliance, and Star Fire.

Red Havens are good eaters. Not familiar w/ the rest listed by TC. ^^^^^^

I've tried growing them here and finally cut down the last one a few months ago and replaced it with a chestnut tree.

The trees grow fine, but the fruit rots before it ever ripens - every single year. The one I cut down had a Red Haven tag, but who knows what it really was - it came from Wal Mart.
