Nuts/Seed Trade

PackerBacker

5 year old buck +
Not sure if any of you trade/sell nuts and/or seed on this site but I will be looking for a northern source for chestnuts, hazelnuts and white oak acorn species. Please let me know if you might have anything available.

I know I will have Pin and Northern Red acorns available if anyone is looking for a source.

I can get you some white and burs.

I have tons of white oak acorns, My hazelnuts are to young yet but hopefully within the next 2 years I'll have some nuts, I have lots of norther red acorns as well.

When your hazels start producing, you gotta grab 'em quick. Seems every critter in the woods loves them

Yeah I just planted AM Hazels in '14, replanted Beaks in '15 as they fist batch never woke up in '14.

I have found SWO along the Wolf river on public lands. One spot is a parking area for a boat landing. Easy to see and pick up lots there but they tend to get run over soon after the drop

I still have some pawpaw if anyone is interested (already sent some to Buck Velvet)

I should have some native chinkapin oaks available (NOT DCO's) in a few weeks.

I will have to look and see, but I might be able to get some native persimmons as well.

I am once again eyeballing a few oaks that are pushing some nice acorns. One appears to possibly be a Schuette's oak(Bur x SWO), but I have to look at it again to make sure. These were planted at the county park about 3 years ago and were planted as very, very large rootball stock. The best one is producing a decent number of large acorns and is like a 5"-6" caliper tree around 15'-20' tall. I have also found a mature red oak species(pretty sure it is a northern red) that is also producing a huge number of large acorns. This tree is around 12"-15" caliper and 35' or so tall. It is growing on a pretty dry sight and appears to be doing very well. Within 50' of this tree are 3 different species of conifer that are dead or are dying from the effects of the drought in the summer of 2012. I will do a bit more investigating of the ID's of these 2 trees and possibly post some pics if I get the chance. If anyone would like some acorns after that, I would be glad to send them a few(if I can beat the tree rats to them that is).

Do you have yours planted in lumite? Mine isn't doing all that great.

No but the ones that made it were blowing up the tubes, we have had great rain this year except for a 2 week stretch with really hot weather.

I'm using mine to be cover+food, so I'm letting them sucker up and be shrubby. Next year I'll probably take the lumite off and let it go free.

Yeah I wasn't really sure what to do, I don't mind if they bush at all I just used tubes to hopefully let them get a strong caliper for a year or 2 before the wildlife destroys 'em.

Not a nut trade but FYI badgersett has seeds for sale for the first time in a long time, hybrid chestnut and hazel. They are the cold hardiest chestnut besides American that I'm aware of. The hazels are pretty neat, got to see some of the genetics on a tour last month, nut clusters of 6+ on there instead of the standard 3.

I haven't seen any on the ground either. I have 5 northern reds and 2 white oaks in my backyard. The reds are dropping and can see a ton of acorns in the trees. I can't find a single acorn on my whites this year.

Are white oaks dropping yet? I checked my local cemetery and there weren't any on the ground.

English white oaks tend to be early droppers compared to other members of the white oak group. I checked a tree yesterday and there were quite a few on the ground already.

There are acorns on the ground at my property but most of em are green, i assume some trees self prune?

I have a absolutely giant bur oak in my neighborhood probably 4' at the base that has been dropping acorns for probably 3 weeks now, but over the weekend it really dropped a ton down. I probably picked up 200 or so and took the caps off and put them in the fridge. I'm going to pop them in the ground this fall. Trying to create a screen of anything I can get to grow in a big field so maybe the tree rats/deer wont find them (being optimistic). I might just use my tree plug planting tool and drop them down 2" into the soil.

I've got some seedlings if you want a few. Columnar oak, and then what I believe are SWO.

Finally got out to check on my "pet" oak at the county park last evening. Took all of about 20 seconds to realize I was too late.:( I have been keeping an eye on this one, as I believe it to be a Schuette's oak(I really like them for deer habitat) and 2 weeks ago it had a good number of acorns on it. I wouldn't call it "loaded", but for a young tree it had quite a number of them. I found literally one acorn last night, which I decided to remove and I will try and start in a pot this winter. So p!ssed I almost blew a gasket. I am pretty sure I am not the only one that was interested in these acorns. With as hard as the one I pulled off was to remove, it seems like someone would have had to have picked them, because the one I got was not really ready to come off the tree on it's own, it was still pretty solidly attached, so I hope it was far enough along that it will still germinate. This is right at the edge of the boat dock parking area, so very easy to back up a pickup and stand in the bed to reach most of the tree. I have some pics on the phone I will upload this evening. I might even try the Tapatalk thing. I still have to get over to the red oak near our house and see if there are any acorns left on that tree, if so I might still be able to get some of those acorns.
