Thanks for the info. The woods where we plant our spruce after logging are very rocky and have many ferns. Those 2 things are what we fight when getting spruce established. Good to know cut roots and imperfect holes won't be killers of young trees. Sometimes our best efforts in the rocks leave me wondering about survival.
