Northern whitetail crabs

NWC. What selection of theirs drops the most consistently in the month of November? Also, how much are the shipping costs?

The 30-06 and droptine are their workhorse crabs for mid-late hunting seasons. Mine have only been in the ground one season. They grew incredibly well this year but it will be a few years before I can give you first hand drop time experience. I did pinch an apple off a 30-06 crab 2 months after planting.

@saundbur - I looked at a map. I think SLN will be my go to for Zone 3a hardy trees. They are pretty far North. I haven't given up on my crabapple dreams. I'm still scheming. With so little snow on the ground at my place, I might be able to get the dozer in there yet this Winter and open up some space. First to plant will be Norway Spruce and ROD since they are more tolerant of poor soil. I'll get my ducks in a row for a 2020 apple/crabapple planting binge.

I left them a message earlier this week and received a text from them yesterday. I have (5) 30-06 and (5) Droptine on the list for spring delivery. I haven't treated my apples very well in the past. Hopefully crabapples need a little less TLC

Mine have been in the ground only 2 years. The vegetative growth has been more than any other apples I have ever planted. Hope to see fruit possibly this year on some.

Mine had awesome vegetative growth this year. I am slightly concerned with my late planting date though. I planted the first week of May 2018. Just hoping the growth below ground was substantial too. It was 6F on our place this morning!

I don’t think that’s a possibility in western NC. Maybe with wind chill factored in on rare occasion.

Off subject, but I was on a guided shark fishing trip at Myrtle Beach, and the guide was telling me that the winters there are worse then in MN. He said because the wetness in the air, makes it colder, I tried to explain to him, it get -40 here, he said temp s in the teens there feel much colder. I laughed and said I am sure

I was stationed at Ft Jackson over the winter years ago, it does get cold and sleets a lot but nothing even remotely close to northern winters humidity or not. The summers there can be muggy terrible hot like nothing Ohio has ever seen, I’ll give them that.

The only such story I can share with you guys was when I was working on a new nuke plant in Oswego N.Y. ( Chummer's neighborhood ). Our super was a guy from Utah - about 6'8" and no neck. He was froze to death the whole time he was there - he said the eastern winters had too much dampness in the air & it chilled him to the bone. He spent much of his time inside the heated trailers. More than once he asked guys in my crew how the F we stood it there.

I've never been to Minnesota to experience -40 to compare, and I wouldn't visit in winter. -15 is plenty for me !

It's certainly much colder where I am in the mountains than it is at the beach and I'd agree the humidity factor makes it more miserable but it's NOT -40 miserable!

They are growing up and out really good similar to enterprise but not so wide. I’ll take a pic and post up for you next time I’m out at the little woods that’s where my oldest ones are. This year I’ll be cutting off all the lower stuff, so far I’ve just done light pruning on anything growing in.
On a side note, the DropTine’s and 30-06’s are still holding a few shriveled apples that the raccoons haven’t spotted yet.

Mine have been in the ground three years and the branch angles are not that good. Really needed some training but I typically don’t do that on wildlife trees.
