No snow cover with a forecast of 20 below tonight

A good 3 year old buck
I don't remember the last time we didn't have any snow cover in central Wisconsin in the middle of January. I'm wondering how this will impact my food plots and the local farmers, Alfalfa, clover, winter wheat and rye. If we do have a wide scale winter kill, how will this impact the deer coming out of winter.

One can hope the native stuff out there does ok but maybe takes out some of the invasive non native crap. Whether that's bugs or plants. Probably wishful thinking

And to sound like an old fart that was around during the 1970s.

-20F? That all you got? Also seem to remember the really cold winters were much drier too and not much snow. Could even still use the bicycle to deliver newspapers.

I wonder if the Bush honeysuckle in SW WI will top kill again and do it's normal resprout. I also have some Miscanthus that I hope survives this cold without any insulation, guess we'll see in spring. Not too worried about my cover crops, but I did utilize vetch, rye, and winter peas this year so I hope they make it.

I didn't even think about the Miscanthus. I have a strip of it that I planted as a test plot about 4 years a go. I've been whacking down last years growth for a thick mulch layer. This will be a good test. I'm hopping this cold snap will take out some of the weeds in my food plots, but that is probably just wishful thinking.

Up here in the NW Wis we didn't have any snow in January last year. Now this year we only have about 6" but it was damn cold last weekend. I had -31 but my chickens survived.

-31 is cold! . With the price of eggs, keep them chickens safe and warm.

Going to be a lot of alfalfa that winter kills.

Dont worry about the rye ,, it may be the toughest plant on earth ,, few warm days late march early april be the greenest thing around ,, that when it really helps deer they need that early green
