Next Range toy?

Don't really need anything else....but Savage is coming out with new 110 models for 2026 . From what I've seen so far all plastic stock jobs , I can resist for now unless they come out with a wood stock model 110 like the old American Classics and Euro Classics.

Henry is coming out with a 30 30 Provider , wood stock pistol grip. I asked for this in Henry's suggestion box so when funds allow I'll add one to the collection.

My main hunting rifle is a synthetic stock Savage 116 Weather Warrior in .300 Savage , and I own 2 other synthetic stock models.

With that said I really prefer a wood stock.

My brother in law has a full auto lower, and I've burned up a few hundred bucks in .223 ammo already. It's also loud as shit. We had cars stopping and staring, which I didn't care for.

Would be a blast to get a silenced 9mm upper for the old Rat-tat-tat. Cheaper and attracts less attention. Maybe even a .22 upper if that's a thing. Then we could teach his kids to shoot full auto.

That's one of the reasons I'm thinking about a bolt action upper... save some money. Plus I'm not huge on blowback that can happen with a suppressed semi. AND... I absolutely can't stand the springy boing sound that so many AR's seem to have when you shoot.

Apparently you can swap parts to avoid those problems. Look into a down-venting BCG and a better buffer kit. I went down the rabbit hole yesterday, and I got a bit overwhelmed at all the options.

I peeked at the rabbit hole but kept my distance. Overriding is a bolt will save money through ammo costs, plus I already have several semi-auto AR's but no bolts (yet).

I’ve wanted a mk12 for quite a while. Think I need a 12.5” upper first though. Something like a geisselle super duty. By the time a guy puts an optic and can on it though things get pretty expensive.

On Reddit and the AR forums, some people are talking about KAK K-spec, and others say a Bootleg adjustable carrier is better. I've also read solid arguments for adjustable gas blocks. There were a few who mentioned buying a barrel with a smaller port or a narrower gas tube, but the arguments against them seemed convincing. I'll probably end up with adjustable carrier and gas block in a few years if the suppressor makes it overly gassy. My 7.62x39 I'll probably not mess with, but while shopping for stripped lowers, I found a site that sells them for $40 and figured I may as well buy 2 so I can build something interesting in the future. I shoot my stock Ruger 556 with a suppressor, but it's for hunting, so I've never noticed a gas issue.

Yeah, everything Geissele is 5x the normal stuff.

Optics do go on sale throughout the year if you follow prices. I have a Vortex red dot with a magnifier, which is pretty basic, but I got it for a song, so I'm happy with it. I recently bought this bundle for under $180 after tax on super sale, with the cantilever and illuminated reticle:

Careful "just buying 2"... that's how I got where I'm at now. At that price you might as well get 3.

That's why I'm limiting it to two. After reading about all the options, I'm overwhelmed with ideas and plans. I'm new to the AR world, but I see why guys go nuts for it. A long-range Mk12 would be awesome. A silenced SBR would be loads of fun, too.

I see guys online talk about dropping 5k on their rifle and then another 1k on a custom camo cerakote job for the rifle, optics, magazines, etc. Blows my mind. Spending over $500 on a rifle is a lot for me, but I don't want to buy cheap junk just because it's cheap. It took me 2 hours just to decide on a short list for lower parts kits. Probably another 3 hours to get a short list of triggers. I'm guessing the lower receiver search took a full day to find something suitable.

It's really a bottomless rabbit hole with endless options and modifications.

Yeah, geissele would be more a gun to rely on if you “need” it than a range toy so it’d be outfitted with primo stuff. I’ve got enough fun stuff to shoot at the range and have a cheap AR that probably hasn’t been shot for a decade.

Mk12 would actually be shot at range because they are supposed to be really accurate and smooth.

The only AR i shoot now is a bcm 14.5” with a suppressor. Needed a custom gas tube and heavier buffer to make it enjoyable to shoot. Without those tweaks it was gassed so heavy it broke the buffer and it was not at all fun to shoot with gas to the face.

Larue mbt trigger is a good one. Better than my timney single stage.

My .338ARC upper with 10.5" barrel just came in. Supressor is ordered. Just waiting on ATF.

I have 2 ARs but I just don't like trying to look through scope to hunt with.I think I will look at the ruger predator

Awesome. Can you keep us updated on the process?

I want to buy some suppressors this year, but every time I ask the people at gun stores what wait times are, no one knows. I think it might be another few months before they get some solid information.

If you could keep us updated as to your personal experience, that would really help.

Telemark, while 6K is way too much for a rifle. I do strongly believe you should have a few good guns rather than a lot of cheap ones. Although cheap doesn't mean bad either. I have a pair of marlin 981T's. One with Burris scope another with Lyman 90 peep sight. Homemade trigger job. Scope one might be getting a $10 camp job today.

You got some European inklings, I highly suggest taking a look at CZ rifles. I got 2. Wife has laid back from shooting some, but I wanted to get her a CZ scout 22lr.

Would love a rock river arms or another A2 styled AR. NY requires a permit like registry for semi-auto guns. Think even something like a plain ol' marlin 60. Tempted, but don't wanna put my foot near that bear trap.

Any gun you have that are range toys? Too nice to ding up, too brutal to shoot much? Shot that browning BLR last week. 20 rounds, my shoulder felt it a bit, but even before my bad neck I couldn't shoot more than 4 or 5 on the bench. I'd have to stand and lean up next to something to shoot it more than that. Next trip or two, the BLR will be a renewed range toy. Going a little lighter than 1900fps, aiming for 1750fps with 300gr pills. Debating buying 250gr Hornady monoflex's or Barnes tsx 250gr ones.

My only range toy is a newish SAR9 that I love. I bought it super cheap, and it's been a fantastic purchase so far. I'm still shooting 124gr through it to break it in, but it runs smooth and shoots like a dream. It's too big to carry concealed, so I'll probably end up bringing it to Norway if I don't just end up buying another one. I prefer rifle shooting, so I'm in the process of putting together an AR in 7.62x39 that should be a do-all rifle once it's built and the extra parts I need are in stock. We have a Ruger 556, but it's set up for coyote hunting.

My Dad has loads of nice guns, but he doesn't let me use them. A couple years ago, I asked if I could borrow his mint condition Sako .270, and his response was "Umm, what for?". I told him it would be nice for antelope in Wyoming, and he said my .308 should be fine, and then offered to loan me a couple Remington rifles he bought used 20 years ago. The nice guns haven't left the safe in decades, but he does have them.

I always preferred American rifles over European brands, and my hunting rifle in Norway is a Weatherby. Unfortunately, the big American brands have some some issues due to corporate BS, so I'm looking more and more at Finnish manufacturers. I still like Savage and Ruger, but I'll probably end up with a Tikka in stainless in the next couple years to replace my Weatherby as my main hunting rifle. European pistols and shotguns still seem pretty solid, but they're generally expensive. I've shot a few Czech guns here, but they're not any cheaper than anything else.

Turkey makes some excellent firearms at very low prices, but they also make a lot of garbage, so it takes some research to find the hidden gems. Two of the last 3 shotguns I bought are Turkish, and they're really nice for what I paid. Unfortunately, the O/U style guns are hard to hunt with in this climate, so I'm bringing my new Benelli pump gun to Norway for hunting birds. The Turkish O/U I have in Ohio I'll keep for upland hunting, and I'll plug my 1100 for waterfowl. My SAR9 pistol is Turkish, and was an incredible bargain. Before Christmas I also bought a Turkish "Winchester" Wildcat that seems awesome, but I haven't shot it yet. I might grab another one if I can get a good deal again.

Regret selling a 1982 Remington ADL 700 in 30-06 with walnut stock. Probably put a Burris full field on it. Shot great, was a heavy gun so recoil was decent.

I Let the kids borrow my guns, but they got to bring them back quick. I always wipe them down afterwards. I got guns from the 60's and 80's looking nicer than the oldest kids 5 year old stuff. Cheap and easy to care for, few do though. Only 3 I do not let them borrow are my CZ ultra lux, the CZ 375 H&H I got as a gift, and a 45 cal caplock. CZ I take great care of, other CZ is expensive to shoot, and the caplock I only load to 40 grains. Not enough umph to hunt with. It's custom made in the 1960's. Might be able to handle 70 grains to hunt with, but don't risk it. Wife takes it to black powder competitions when she goes with me.

Ah crap...I didn't realize that's what you meant by a "range toy" when you started the thread. 😆 I just thought you meant the next gun we were looking to add to the arsenal. Yeah, the Savage 99 I mentioned doesn't meet that criteria.

But since that post....I picked one up in .243. Going to replace the scope and mount with a nice 60's era scope and mount. Maybe a Weaver pivot mount and a nice Redfield 1x4. Then off the range with my new toy!
