Newbie with General Food Plot Questions

Hey Yoderjac, you taught me something else. Just looked at my soil tests and it confirms your comment on nitrogen. Funny, maybe, how I never noticed that. Thanks.

Yield is over rated. High yielding crops are high in carbs and low in protein. 6" clover or alfalfa has 3 times the protein content as the same plant will have when it is mature. Quality is the answer not quantity. When a crop is high in protein and nutrient rich the animal (humans included) need to eat far less to get the same nutritional value from what they/we eat.

Any yes less can certainly be more. That is also why preferred deer plot species and ag. cover crop species are the same many times. These species are great at sending roots deep into the soil and "mining" P and K as well as other trace minerals which in turn are transferred to the animal upon digestion.

Put a good plot rotation plan together and due away with adding chemical based ag fertilizers whenever possible. The high salt content in them destroys the beneficial microorganisms that are essential for soil heath.
