New cabin Must Haves?

To each his own. However blown in fiberglass in my opinion is better than blown in cellulose. Cellulose settles much more and also holds and moisture if it gets damp for much longer.
The cellulose that's blown in wet won't settle and it's packed in tighter than the fiberglass. If your vapor barrier is applied properly it won't get wet.

I did fiberglass wish I would have used cellulose I do believe it to be a better product. Next time I build another new house it will be cellulose or foam.

I got allergies pretty bad. I do not miss heating with wood. However, I do recommend a non electric heat source. The future of the gird is a bit in turmoil. PEriodic soures like solar and wind, transmission delays. Large new loads from making companies electrify, like cement steel and glass plants.

I do recommend heat pumps. I am the installer for the family. Pioneer pumps can be had for like $1000 each for 18k btu ones. A 18 and a 12of them keep my 2400sqft 2x6 firberglass house with 20 year old windows warm all witner. Wife like's it cold an no heat upstairs. Did that when heating oil was pushing $6 a gal. at 17 cent a kwh its like having $2.30 heating oil.

I you suspect water freeing in inaccesible areas, install heat trace. Insulating pipes has its ups and down. Can make things worse in just the right spot.

Neighbor years ago had a double wide with no basement. Spray foamed the underside. Pipes froze that year. He had to dig out the foam. Try hard not to use exterior walls to run pipe. Especially if you plan on running the heat low.

IF you get wifi, they have leak detectors. Sense constant flow on your water system. Not sure if they have remote shutoff valves yet. Would be easy to do if they don't.

Speaking of electric, might want to get the fuse box solar ready too. A run on conduiit, extra space to run a disconnect box for it.

Having just built a barn house last year, plastic wrap the outside whole house/cabin as soon as it is framed, cover roof (top of trusses) with the plastic bubble wrap looking barrier. Will block wind and moisture.
Steel roof, steel siding, spray foam insulation..the plastic wrap makes it simple to replace siding sheet if you would ever need too.

If you’re pouring any concrete that will be indoors put heavy plastic down over your stone before pouring for moisture barrier.
Plastic over floor of attic then blow in insulation in attic, I like a good HVAC system like Rheem.

Get a good dehumidifier

We will be doing the same next year when we build our forever house except it will be on a 4’ crawl space.

When wiring a new home......I would have the electrician set it up so it's easy to add a standby generator. Also would run a gas line for the generator. Figure out a place to set the genny away from your living area (noise).

We put in a whole house surge protector. Kinda expensive....until your home gets hit by lighting. Then well worth it.

The rural electric commission offers a meter that you can plug a generator into. We have one currently.

The generator is a great idea.
We run heat, stove and water heater on propane, so we have a 500 gallon tank. With a good Generac back up system it can get through a long power outage.
We plan on being set up that way when we build our new house.

I have whole house gas generator at my home. One of my best investments. We just continue as normal if power goes out.

Whole house is on my list too, with a dedicated 500 gallon propane tank.

We have a whole house backup generator too. I got it on Natural Gas.....so it's relatively cheap to operate and no fuel to store. When the power goes out.....seconds later the generator starts up and we are back at full power.

We get allot of power outages with our power company......too many overhead lines up here in the forested area of MN. We had a major tornado blow threw here nine years ago. Lost power for over a week. The generator was flawless......at a time when the humidity and heat were stifling. We did not miss a beat. That event alone has paid for that genny.......tho we need our generator at least two times each year due to power outages.

You guys have whole house generators at your camps/cabins? Remember, this isnt for my home, it's for our hunting camp.

What's a power outage? I've never experienced such a thing on solar.

Can happen with the AC on COLD, and lots of freezers running, and a well pump starting, while your welding some heavy iron and more big power stuff. For you however.....it could happen if you run a toaster.....or a coffee pot.....at the same time when your charging your cell phone.

Mine is on the gas line too. It’s been money well spent.

I have solar at my hunt camp. But a generator on a large tank is a good option too.

And roof venting...

Same. Lived off grid for 5 years solid. Not one outage, and we only had about 800 watts in panels and 20kwh of storage.

Cabin scenerio; 100 watt panel and 50Ah battery would give me all I need for regular use.
