I've been bitten by the Limbertwig bug. Don't have any producing yet, hoping in a couple of years. I don't have any Old Fashioned LT planted but I do have several Red Limbertwigs planted. Some sources say the Old Fashioned & Red are the same variety. I have 8 or 9 other varieties planted also. Looking forward to hearing of your experiences with the ones you have planted.
Thanks greyphase.
Here are my experiences so far:
I have a Black on MM111 that had been fruiting great with no signs of any disease for several years. It was one of the trees that we moved with a backhoe last year due to the road coming through. My FL had a full sized black that was just beginning to fruit and we had to move it too. Both look healthy after the move but you can tell that it set them back some. I've seen enough from Black to know that I love it.
I have two Caney Forks LTs that just begin fruiting last year. Both will have apples this year but not many. I've seen only some minor leaf spotting and hardly any fireblight (FB).
My Myers Royal LT is just coming to bearing age. I see a few apples on it this time, but won't be loaded. I think next year will be its time to start showing out.
Brushy Mountain LT is a disappointment to me so far. It showed FB last year and is showing it again this year. But, it appears to be making several apples despite some FB. I will watch this tree and possibly top work it. My guess is that this cultivar would be best grown as a full sized tree rather than a semi dwarf.
The Old Fashioned that I showed pics of above was planted winter of 13/14. The tree is pretty small. I really need to remove most of those apples and let the tree grow, but you know the feeling of wanting to get a first apple from a tree. I will thin them in a few days and try to just leave a few. Pretty excited about the possibilities with this apple.
Keep me posted on your experiences too. We can compare notes.
