I have been fairly successful at grafting this year, i plan on getting pictures of everything, but here are a few to start off with.

Cortland and Liberty grafts onto seedling rootstock.

Very nice looking grafts! I had better success this year, but I'm still learning a lot. I've been pushing the envelope but I'm having some success. One of the issues I had was that I started with crabapple seedlings and then grafted apple varieties to some of them. It is certainly possible but it is more difficult. I found that if I graft when crabapples are still dormant, I risk cold snap issues. If I wait until later, the crabs want to push out their leaves early and they get ahead of the apple scion.

This year, I learned that parafilm-M which works great for keeping scions from drying out and for bench grafting, is not the right kind of parafilm for chip budding. It will work, but not as well as another type of parafilm I have. It really takes a lot of grafting to distinguish trends verses luck of the draw because there are so many variables.

You are doing great!

Thanks,

Jack

Looks like you know what your doing Ben. Good job. Did you get a Loysburg apple graft to take? I have an extra tree in the nursery that you can have if you want it.

Thanks guys, This was my first experience grafting seedlings, it definitely requires more patience than top working. I top worked 2 apple trees with the Loysburg apple, one last year and one this year, both are doing great, the Loysburg tree had more scion to choose from this year than it did last year. I would take you up on the tree offer, but i am having trouble finding enough spots for the trees i have going now, but thank you for the offer.

By the way, how old were those seedlings when you grafted them?

A few pear grafts, for whatever reason i only had about 50 % take vs 90% with apple seedlings. These are the 3 survivors, 2 kor giant, and one unknown pear from my dads yard in iowa. I have never seen a picture of the fruit, but he said neighbors pick them to can.

My grafts are still growing, the four tall ones on the left are 2 cortlands and 2 liberties on seedling rootstocks, there is another liberty and a wolf river not far behind, the ones to the right are seedlings that i just t budded with goldrush.
