Mountain Ash question

I'll be planting some mountain ash shortly and I'm wondering if I should add screen around the trunk to prevent vole damage? I'm planning on caging most of them to prevent deer browsing, but I'm not sure if aluminum screen will be needed around the trunks or not.

Though I have never seen vole damage of any kind, I have heard from several people that mountain ash is eaten by voles and deer.
