South Minneapolis has been a zone of transition as long as I can remember. I grew up 100 miles to the South West.....but, Between High School, the Army, College, and early work life, I lived and often worked within a few blocks of Lake Street in South Minneapolis, It has always been a hot-spot for young people, mixed races, low cost apartments, drug and alcohol abuse, house parties, and university life, etc. Lots of chaos in this area....always. In short, it's always been "where the action is".
I think you can take a 15 mile stretch (?) of Lake street from lake Calhoun to St Paul and a two mile stretch North and South from Lake street....and it's in this area you are going to find 80% of the crime and turmoil taking place. This area includes the downtown, Cedars / Riverside, Little Somalia (aka Little Mogadishu), the tent communities that spring up, Target Center, US Bank Stadium, the George Floyd debacle, BLM Headquarters, the warehouse district, 7 Corners, the bulk of the light rail (which was to re-vitialize the downtown and connects downtown to the Mall of America), Dinky town, "UP-Town", The U of M, and the third precinct which was burned to the ground. This area has something for everyone that thrives on Chaos.
All of these known areas are just a stones throw from one to the next....and some overlap. In general it's called South Minneapolis. Yes, there are some other pockets of chaos too.....but none are so connected as this general area.
Few people with the financial means will stay living in this area. It's always been an area to find trouble. But the corruption and subsidies only added fuel to the fire. Then, the sanctuary status, and the importation of the Somali community put it over the edge. Very fragmented interests with special needs / motives.
Not sure what to do with this area......but if the Lord wanted to give the world an anemia......this is where he would insert the tube.
