MG Source?

Where is a good place to buy MG rhizomes?

And how much does it spread? Is it easy to keep under control.

Same here^^^^^^^^
Thanks for the replies...Maple River it is.
I'm going to plant a few rows of it for fast road screen while I'm waiting for my conifers to get big enough.

It will only spread to about a 5 foot diameter after many years. It won't show up 20 feet from where you plant it. Gets a nice seed head but the seeds are sterile. Nothing to control really unless you want to kill it after the conifers are tall enough. Then gly in the spring, mid and late summer. Three doses should have very dead.

Maple Rivers is my pick also..

Lacy Creek and Maple Rivers are the only places I trust.

Maple River, counting this year. I have ordered over 3000 rhizomes from them. I recommend getting them in the ground as early as possible. They had great survival percentage but the ones planted later were the ones that if I had ones that didn't come up, were in that planting period. All were planted the same way, in tilled soil, 3-4" deep, firmly packed down. I did use a dibble bar in some herbicide killed clay in some experimental plantings and they did as good as any. I am planting most this was this spring.

Thanks, I placed an order with them. I'll get them in the ground pretty quick once they arrive.
I really like all the benefits for wildlife that I've read about it along with blocking the view.
Don't know why I'm so late on planting this for the road screen quite a few of you suggested it a couple years ago....better late than never!

Are you just going to plug them in and then kill off the grass after things green up a bit?

My plan is to plug them in and let them do their thing. Once the trees get bigger I'll play it by ear, haven't really thought that far ahead yet. The trees will be 20+ feet behind the MG, I just wanted to be sure it wouldn't try to get out of hand.

Placed a small order for 50. Will see if I have the touch before diving in.

I ordered a few hundred to start with, kind of excited about this project.

Anyone know eta of Maple shipping plans?

Not sure on the shipping because I pick mine up but my order has been ready mid to late April the last couple years.

I've planted MG both ways, with ground prep and just planting them in the ground. I've found they will grow good with no ground prep but your screen will take a little longer to establish.

A couple pics of the no prep. First one is a row of rhizomes planted 2 years ago and this pic is last summer and the second pic is rhizome clusters planted last spring and the pic is last fall. The rhizomes are a little slower to take and grow compared to the rhizome clusters.

A pic of 3yr old rhizomes that were planted in CIR switch, no prep.

I planted 1000 last year for a road screen. It was so easy and they done so well that I ordered 2000 more for this year. I plan on using them to break up some of my food plots and also speed up bedding cover in a field that I was just letting grow up. The attached pictures are from a local farmer that planted a corner of his field for a little extra cover, he said they love it. He also said the only thing he done to it since planting is mow it each spring, no fertilizer. You can't go wrong with this stuff.KIMG1436.JPG

Weed Wacker, that's exactly what I have in mind. I'm going to increase my order and attempt to make a bunch of bedding spots like that, in my highlighted area here (15 acres). I put over 1,000 various shrubs in the open spots a few years ago, but losses have been extreme. I'm hoping I finally have a solution with the Miscanthus. The spot was originally a CRP tract of hardwoods, but all that remains, and what shows up in the pic, are black walnut. Unless I gain better feedback, I'll go with a three pace spacing.

Just as an FYI - growing it from cutting is real easy as well.....hell I can do it and I'm an idiot! Soak cuttings in water for a few weeks in the sun, they sprout roots, plant in small pots or even directly into the ground and keep them in the sun and watered and BAM! You got MG! I turned green "sticks" into 2 feet tall grass!!! With some help and encouragement from Bill I did roughly 30 last year as my "beginners course" into MG. I plan on using it for road screens, screen stand access and plots and just anything I can think of.

That is some good info^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I remember seeing a post or thread on that here now.
