Mature apple pictures

Debating what to do with my saint lawrence order. They're all on anty. I am finishing a single row oreinted north-south with plenty of light on the east and west sides. 30 yards to a 15ft tall hedgerwo and about 70 yads to the hedgerow on the property line. Got M111's 16ft apart. I don't think anty's are going to like a6ft apart. I might be able to finish the row wider. Could just nip the top of the trees and use the scion for more M111's. Even tossing around buying some M7's for the area.

Would like to see some mature trees sizes in anty and dolgo. I cant find the thread where a guy had a few sizes around his pond. Not sure if he had full sized in that pic or not.

Got 80 feet between a Galarina on M111 until I young AWHO which I think is M111 too only 3ft tall. Then 32 feet until a dolgo on B118 planted last year. B118 could go up north. Area is between foodplot and in-laws house about 100 yard between plot and house and treeline is about 15 yards from the plot. Not sure if going to M7's would help the deer feel more comfortable. Been considering a row of some sort of shrub.

Green square in my 1/2 acre backyard plot. Blue lines are some young white spruce. hey growing barely, deer are nibbling them. Might clean up to a single row and cage this year. Yellow circled area is caged white pine plant 2 or 3 years ago. About 3-4ft tall and doing ok. The red dots are proposed tree planting area. Trees will actually be inline with other apple trees in picture. Google maps is taking a fall pciture.. Shadows of trees seem like its much more wooded around house than actually is. Place gets plenty of dusk time activity. Grandma babysits a few kids

Got my good fruit trees for human closer to my home which is just north of this picture. Was making this spot late winter trees. Row already has 3 galarinas and another enterprise. Doing AWHO, winter wildlife, violi's, turning point, and maybe keeping that dolgo and AWHO already in the row. Maybe add a single north south row of red dogwood between the row of apple trees and the house.

Not expecting a boon and crocket record back here, just making a nice evening meal for a few does and a scrubby buck or two.

I gotta say, I'm disappointed. ^ This wasn't what I was hoping for at all. 😜

I suspect I'm the guy with the pond and trees. When I bought my place, the yard was very open with a few black cherry trees and a pond. In 2010 and 2011, we planted a variety of apples on a variety of rootstocks. It has been fun to manage them and watch them grow over the years, but if I had it to do over again, I would plant more trees on Ant. The only thing on Ant initially were a dozen Violi's from SLN. They started slowly, but around 3rd or 4th leaf took off. They are now far larger than trees on M111, M7, B118, P18, and Coldstream crabs that were topworked. I suspect my soil has too much clay for B118, as they have been marginal trees for me. Several of the P18s died. Coldstream crabs have done very well as rootstock, but do get a large amount of root suckers. I downsized the cages and the deer prune them fairly well. M111/M7 have both been great for early fruit, easy training, and easy spraying. The Ants, however, are much larger with an enormous fruit load (at least with Violi). I just acquired and adjoining parcel, and all of my apples planted so far have been either grafted to Ant or Ant rootstock to be topworked later. I believe we spaced these (around the pond) at 25 feet. It looked ridiculous for several years, but I believe they were close to touching at year 10 or so. One thing to consider is your view. We still see a lot of deer from the house, but the view is much more obstructed by all of the apple trees. First pic is Violi's from this spring, second is end of October with truckloads of apples, third is Ant/Violi on left followed by multiple M7 Centennials/Chestnuts. At the far right is Galarina on M7. Next to those are F. Querina on M111, although they may be out of view. I've found M7 and M111 get about the same size on my place (dependent on apple variety of course) IMG_3759.jpgIMG_5803.jpgIMG_1161.jpg

Super outcomes!!! Thanks for the pics. We love Antonovka rooted trees too. P-18's are doing well for us, as are our MM-111 trees. Those 3 root varieties all work here. B-118's seem to lean after a few years here.

I've planted a lot of SLN trees on Antonovka rootstock and I've been very impressed with the results. They develop a very strong frame and can withstand larger fruit loads than some of the other rootstock I've tried.

I typically plant them 20-30 feet apart to give them room to grow outward.

Those trees on Antonovka are sure impressive! Wonder how they'd compare on Dolgo rootstock?

Thanks deepsleep,

What s the spacing on those m7 / m111's? Since this is kinda a thread about your trees. How do you like violi's? How do they drop? Starting dropping / half/ and maybe howthey are new years or so. Same with galarina too. I am debating between centennial and redfree for another early apple at home for me and the deer. Going to spray like you do, bur prefer to only do so for bugs. Might do some cedar apple sprays, but prefer to avoid the big need to.

I got maybe 4 or 5 trees on B118 in a 25x25 spot, aloto f M111's in the area 25x25 too. However, this single row might stick with the original 16ft spacing in that area. Those anty's look huge.

I order violi's, winter wildlife, all winter hangover, a big deer, and a sweet 16. I may change the order and just to w/w,awho, and violi's. Might buy a sweet 16 from mehrabyan. Also, any experience with their siberian crab rootstock/seedlings from saint lawrence. Grafting all but 2 or 3.

Anty's will go up at camp. but, will steal some scion material from them before they go up and plant on m111. Row already has 3 galarinas and an enterprise all on m111 on one end, and room for a few more before if gets to a dolgo on b118. Dolgo is from turkey creek. if anyobdy on here has one from turkey creek would nice to hear about this particular one. Dolgo can be quite a bit different from one vendor to another. Deer got plenty to eat at any time of year for apple trees in my yard already.

I believe the spacing is 18ish on the M7/M111. These were the first trees we planted so we planted them at recommended spacing. The Violi's have been pretty amazing at attracting/holding deer, especially this year. We normally have a couple of mature bucks that consistently use the property, but this year, they were working on the line you can see in some of the pics. I was very worried about the season with all of the disruption. The first morning we were there, I stayed in because I still had some prep work to get done, and we saw 3 mature bucks visit those trees. They also like to check out a "Siberian" seedling from Coldstream that I left because it had decent sized fruit and the deer were always checking it. The big downside is susceptibility to CAR. The other seedlings from Coldstream I topworked. I'm not sure how late the Violi's hold, but I can tell you they trickle down in late October and there are tons of them still by the end of November. You mentioned Galarina as well--it is one of my favorite apples. Very easy to grow, seems to bear heavily every year, very disease resistant, etc. As for SLN, the only thing I have from them is a dozen Violi's. The ones in this thread are in my yard, in full sun, and the earliest/heaviest producers as a result. As for spraying, I only spray once or twice right after petal fall. I end up with plenty of deer and human apples. On a related note, one spray of Immunox will control CAR well enough for what we do. Here are a few more pictures, including photos of a couple of Coldstream seedlings that I left. I remember the first year they were matchstick sized and I was laughed at by my hunting crew. Violi's this fall with deer for scale

IMG_2120 2.jpg Yard after snow on Halloween last year. Violi's are the big 4 in the corner. M7 Centennials (smallest) then Chestnut, then Galarina.
IMG_2121.jpg

Violi's now on left with seedling crabs topworked to Liberty, Arkansas Black, Mac, Snowsweet, Ashmead's Kernal, etc. Behind those are another 25 or so trees and behind those about 15 chestnuts.

Here's one of the twigs I was laughed at for planting. It is next to a plot we don't hunt anymore, so this is from 2 years ago. A CSN seedlingIMG_5807.jpg

Last one is the Siberian seedling from CSN. Very susceptible to CAR. Tastes terrible. Deer check it frequently. I have some CSN seedlings I didn't graft that have pea-sized fruit, by the way. I tried to leave the ones with larger fruit. This photo is deceptive. The fruit is about 1" in diameter.

Here are a few older pictures to give the young folks some motivation. First is 2O13. Violi's are on the far right. I was pruning them to get them above the cages so they look like lolipops. The next is 2016 with a small crop, either the first or second, and 3rd is 2018 when they really started to drop big crops. They were planted in 2011 to give an idea on precocity with Antonovka. I'm not sure how precocious Violi's crab is so I'm not sure how long it takes to bear with other varieties. I also dug through some old order forms and discovered the Galarina and Florina Querina are both on M7, which is interesting to me. On my soil, they are nearly the same size as my trees on M111 and definitely fruited earlier, but are more prone to leaning with heavy crop loads, FWIW. DSCN2535.jpg

Great pics. I am in the time of year where you 2nd guess your tree order 348 times.

Been hemming n hawing about putting trees in for years. Folks and mysef complain they take too long. Glad I put my foot down in 2021. Was loosing my old tree orchard by 2 or 3 a year. A few didn't have a crop in 4 years or so. Now I have easily replaced all of those old trees with new ones.

I think we all do the hemming and hawing and second guessing of orders…my issue is I start looking at my tree maps and thinking..I can fit another one in there or if I move this one here and this one to here then I gotta go back and see what the next tree was that I wanted..not to mention other people (wife/in laws/others) chiming in with “well we would like to plant some apples sometime”..or “can we plant some peaches?”..can balloon orders quickly!

Just placed a mehrabyan order...... sweet 16, redfree, and a liberty/enterprise/sweet 16 for maybe my coworker. He has been tire kicking adding to my order. He gets them fine, if not oldest kid might be getting a house by then. make a 2nd row of trees at home.......

Sent an email to saint lawrence too. changed out the sweet 16 and big deer for another violi's and another winter wildlife. Those trees look pretty nice now....
