Plum and Nannyberry

I've got 10 of each coming next month and have a few questions.

Do I need to cage the American plum? How far apart should I plant them, in a row or just in a cluster?

I plan on caging the Nannyberry but how far apart should I plant them? I'd like to use weed mat around them too.

I would say more than likely on the plum . I’ve never planted Nannyberry. We typically do rows of plum, but I did a small cluster last yr… so far so good .

They definitely sucker !!

Maybe this helps on spacing. Planted 12 ft. apart. Deer love bedding under these plums. These were caged.

I have some 12 year old plums that were not caged and are only 3’ tall. 10 feet away I have a caged plum that is 15’ tall with lots of fruit. They send out runners once they get large, so you can plant them a little farther apart if you would like.

Nannyberry are cool small trees, but the bucks will rub every one if given the chance. I’d recommend caging them if possible.
