Lucked out on some spruce!

Had a buck or bucks beat the crap out of about ten of the trees in the past two weeks. It surprised me some because it is right along the road and it gets a lot of traffic.

Some of the trees went from this;

To this;

I think most will live they just wont be so pretty.

On a positive note my oldest sons friend came up with eight very nice yard quality 3' potted black spruce for $12 each, I planted them yesterday in the privacy strip. The sons buddy is turning out to be a great source for inexpensive trees, I bought five six foot tall emerald arbovites a couple months ago for $16 that I planted at the house. I have plenty of room out at the farm for any trees he comes up with!

Damn! Looks like they had a brushhog run over them!

Bucks love to rub on spruce. We have some odd-shaped trees too at camp from rubbing. They come back in a few years and seem to fill in where limbs were broken. Just ugly for a while. I throw a little 10-10-10 down to stimulate new growth.

Thanks for the triple 10 tip, I'll try that.

Trees the size of your pic - I'd use about 3/4 cup sprinkled around the tree in a circle about 18" - 20" in dia. I put the triple 10 down in about 3rd week of April in northern Pa. location.

H20 - I just saw 3 spruce trees at camp that were rubbed this fall, as well as several spruce rubbed in past years. The older rubbed ones are recovering nicely and should be thicker because of the past damage. It looks like the spruce are pushing more new growth to make up for what was lost a few years back. I snipped a short bit of leader and that'll push more growth too. No worries if it happens to your spruce, as long as it's not so bad that it kills the tree from total destruction type rubbing. They come back. Spruce are the best screen we've found - by far !!

Here are some of the 3' black spruce I put in last weekend, so far they haven't been beat on (the wife wanted four of these for our yard). I hope it's getting late for the rubbing? They are all so close to a busy country road I'm still surprised they get bothered so....but I do have nine different bucks on camera four hundred yards away from these.
A couple more of the ones planted in Sept got hit and re-hit this past week.

Nice trees ^^^^^

very nice, congrats on the get, sweet deals are fun to run into.
