Low fencing to discourage deer movement

I'm starting to think about next year, and im thinking about fencing a part of my property to discourage deer movement as I want to put a red neck cabin / blind on the south side of my property next to a bluff. Any one have good success doing something similar?

I’ve used fencing to steer deer movement. IME It only works for under 150 foot. After that they say screw you and jump it.

I’ve given this a ton of thought too. I could see it possibly deterring maybe a doe being chased or deer just lazily meandering but ultimately no it wouldn’t deter much. The other aspect is where the fences is stopped it could theoretically create a nice pinch for someone on the other side. I’ve heard of the Drury goons using hay bales to line a perimeter but wouldn’t work in my case since it’s all woods.

My family's property is covered in ~3 foot high rock walls that were built 100+ years ago. They're great at encouraging deer movement through the openings, but they're obviously not 100%-the deer will cross where they want to cross

Some of my favorite stands are near fence openings. More often than not, the deer will pick the easiest route if everything else is equal.

Yep, i've got some dilapidated barbed wire through some of my woods. In some areas enough is up to funnel deer to the spots that trees have fallen and brought it down.

Watched a young buck pace a fence for 10 minutes last weekend before finally jumping over. He absolutely would have taken an easier path if there was one. Where he jumped over just happened to be where I wired the top strand down to make a low spot.

Yes, it works, within reason. I've used cut cedar trees.

I think the breaks are key, or like Cat said a low spot. I think a deer will jump 1000’ of continuous fence wherever they want. Put a gate in it or a low spot and that is where they will go.

I'm not sure deer would jump large round bales if they can'/t see what is on the other side; I've been told they won't jump if they can't see what is on the other side (landing zone). Perhaps if they were pushed/spooked hard enough, they'd make a blind jump.

I’m not a big fan of fences. I’ve seen a doe upside down and stuck on a barbed wire fence before. I try to remove them as much as I can and use hinged trees, rock piles, man made trails as an alternative.

I would use this much more often if it didnt cost so much to install. I have used existing fence, as well as some cheap amazon plastic and zip ties...the latter gets taken out by growth pretty quick. Its the typical deer engagement akin to making waters flow where you want.....it will work a little and even great in some situations....but if the deer have been using an area for years, there is a reason and a little tweak is the best you can expect to get away with
