If I dig the pond on this new plot, I’ll probably end up with a quarter acre plot or so. Planning on 500 lbs of lime, and 200 pounds of gypsum.

How'd you get the gypsum?

Would be interested in trying it out after another soil test. Calcium was pretty high. Good soil, but signficiant compaction. 2 out of the 4 sides have 3-5 yr old apple or spruce trees close, so I'll have to no till 20ft in on those sides pretty soon.

Home epot used t be cheap on the powdered lime and more $ on te pelletized. Like 3.50 and 4.50. Now it's like 6-7 bucks. Tried the barn ime this year was a bit cheaper 50lbs for $4. Stuff is noticeably coarser than powdered lime. 25% of it looks like cat little sized.

At Menards. Like $9 per 40 lb bag. Lime is gonna do most of the calcium lifting on the new plot. I just bought enough gypsum to put down a healthy dose of Sulfate. Still haven’t decided on my blend for the new plot.

The base will be the same, but I’m gonna throw some extras in.

Now you got me looking for gypsum. Seems tractor supply has it for $17 a bag in the store.

Sold frank the tank. The 13hp rototiller. Just beating me up too much using it. Still got a tiny honda rototiller for tree plantings and a 4ft set of tow behind discs for the ATV.

What's the usual dosage for gypsum per acre?

Depends.

Good OM/good calcium: zero
Ok OM/good calcium: 200-300 lbs/ac/year
Ok OM/low calcium: 1,000-2,000 lbs/ac

You really need to know the math on your calcium to magnesium ratios. You can fly off the far end with too much. This is why a comprehensive soil test is so important.

Those high rate areas, I won’t always put it on at once. And that is mostly a cost and labor thing. But I’ll keep a running total in my head and plan out a number of applications and then drop down to maintenance once I get close. Once I’m at 5% OM and high calcium, I’ll quit altogether.

2370 lbs /acre calcium
297 lbs/ acre magnesium
pH is 5.8 OM is 3.7%
buffer pH 5.8

Thought the test included CEC, but it didn't pH and buffer pH were the same, thinking I am maxed out.

This sample was from january 2024. Added roughly 1/2 ton /acre of lime since then.

What kind of lime did u put on?

You’re already 8:1 on Ca:Mg. I wouldn’t go past 10.

If you’ve got a 6 buffer pH, it’s gonna be tough to make that move. I’d keep an eye on your crops. If they look like they’re still not popping, use some broadcasted Pell lime. Should be enough to get your crop thru.

Been tossing a wrench in this machine since 2018 or so. More years than not, used pelletized lime with a decent amount of magnesium.

Kind of at a standstill right now. For some reason the wheat did very well with a bit of rye in it. Local farmer produces alot of wheat and I bought a few bags. Kind of feel like letting it go and see what happens. PRetty thick stand of wheat in both the 2024 food plot extension and 1/2 of the exisiting plot. There is a few red aramath pants in the middle section. I left that spot alone, which was plantain and clovers. I did no till rye with some wheat, but there is some rye in it with a few weeds.

Also, I am behind on house maintenance. This plot is 50 yards away from the house. Thinking of not focusing on hunting at home, but still put a food plot in. But, would be nice for a december draw. Got alot of painting and garage work to do. Redoing the pool area this spring and might work on prepping for it. Focused on food plots, apples trees, and not spooking deer for too many years at home. I literally have thousands of acres I can hunt elsewhere.
