Kubota MX series

Turkish

5 year old buck +
I’m looking at a well used MX5200. 1700hrs, 2015 model. Hydrostatic transmission.

Is this a concerning number of hours?

On the surface, would say that tractor (as a compact not a full size model) has used up about half its useful life without some major expense in future. What does tire tread look like? They are getting pricey. Works out to about several hours a week, every week for last ten years. Private individual or business? Would maybe go max offer of around 50% new. If same hours but more like 20 yrs old can figure it had a cushy life. But at 10, that rig has seen some long hour days probably.

If a rental place would consider all the noobs who probably ran it and discount it according. They did dumb things just trying to learn how to operate it. I did too the first few yrs owning a tractor. But new operators every week are hard on stuff. Lent my rig out to half dozen friends in the early days. Think 5 outta 6 times something happened even if they did fix it. Bent my back blade mounting, broke the steering coupling, power washed the chit outta the dash and now couple gauges don't work or erratic. Hey what are friends for? Lol. But you get the point. Constant new learners are hard on stuff and discount your offer if that is true for this rig.

Kubotas are good rigs tho. No problem with used if fair priced.

I have to get a Kubota. I have a Kubota dealership about 5 miles away and do not intend to buy a trailer to haul it. No other brands sold nearby.

This particular one is for sale clean by and is allegedly one-owner, but the hours concern me a little. I’d also need to replace the tires.

See if your Kubota dealer would be willing to do an inspection on it pre buy. Even if you have to pay a bit - it’s likely worth the costs even if you don’t buy the tractor. That way you know exactly what you’re getting into!! I know my Kubota dealer will work on my Case. Great folks all around!

Tires are around 3-4k for 4. Thats not including filling them with beet juice. Also, might need rims depending on what they filled them with. Not likely, but not impossible. Washer fluid bets them up a bit.

Look down every hole. Gunk in the cylinder head. Coolant overflow look alright (fluid change). Hydro filter look recent? Check the front diff oil, especially if it has a loader. Hows the loader pins.

Could be a good deal could be a headache. I'd compare buying that versus lets say a new B2600. Smaller, but more reliable. Think they avoid the diesel exhaust equipment too.

My brother in law buy numerous L series. Going MX sized, he buys case stuff instead. Runs a grain business and 3 several hundred head a piece dairy farms.

I feel I need at least the MX class or the biggest L. I’m gonna have to hold out for one with R1s. A lot of these have R4s and that won’t work for me.

R1's are cheaper to replace than R4's. Last one I had was a L3200 with R1's. Needed more hp because I was on a steep hillside and had to snowblow uphill to get to the road.

I have an MX5200 it does alright for most things. I have had it for just over 5 years, bought it new. A lot less hours than one you are looking at but we use it "vigorously" when we use it.

Maybe a tradin from your local dealer would be an option

I’ve used my tractor a good bit over last few years and it has 200 hours on it. That is a lot of hours.

can they service other tractor models at that dealership?

Unless the price was right I would look for another machine. Could be fine but I always trust my gut and sounds like yours is telling you something.

I tend to agree

Found another that a dealer has on consignment. 2018 MX5800 4wd with 85 hours for $27k. Has 3rd function for a grapple and 2 rear remotes already. These are options I really want but are hard to come by on used MXs. Seems like it’s priced pretty close to half of a new one. Low hours but sounds like it sat out in the weather some. Some faded paint, no rust. Any thoughts?

It’s a little more than I wanted to spend, but my gut tells me this is a good deal.

That’s sounds more like it. Some hobby farmer bought it and never used it.

Does It have a loader. That would be a big deal to me. Most of the older Kubotas have some faded paint. Typical of the color a few years back. Is it a hydro or gear shift. I'd own nothing other than a hydro tranny for many reasons. Lots of used tractors for sale...shop wisely. Get all you need when you pull the trigger.....those options are not cheap later. Buy once / cry once. 85 hours is nothing on a 7 year old tractor.

I figure 100 to 200 hours / year is a hobby farmer, food plotter, or home owner. Farmers will do from 500 to 1000 hours and much more / year. Industrial users and rental tractors are likely more trouble than they are worth owning.

When you find the "right" used tractor with all the stuff you want and need on the tractor......and its in very good condition.......take a deep breath and pay what you need to own the right tractor for your needs.

Turkish, the 5200 has a turbo, which I find most machines over 50hp do. I’d have to think at 1700 hours it’s closer to failure replacement than it is new.

Not sure.....but I think you can expect 3000 hours or more out a a good model without major issues. I'd question 5000 hours tho. But most operators on this site would not put over 200 hours per year and many would not put on 100. So if you use it 100 per year and maintain it.....you may expect another 17 to 25 years out of that tractor? Does that sound logical?

At one time I was putting about 200 hours per year on my CUT when I did lots of land breaking and stump grinding. Now I'm more into the maintenance of food plot mode.....and put less than 100 hours per year with mowing, loader work and using my drill etc. Going no-till has reduced my hours significantly.

I bought a new MX6000 a year and a half ago and paid twice that. I'd buy that 2018 in a heartbeat if I were you, might even get it down to 25k?

They weren’t budging on price but I bought it. Hood paint was a touch faded, but the grey frame and chassis paint looked brand new and shiny.

Also has top and tilt already installed. Since I plan to do a good bit of grading work, this is gonna come in handy.

Now to get some storage and implements. Uggh. It never ends.
