johantorp pear

Who has this pear and can comment? I've seen Turkey Creek mention it and H20fowler.

Any disease issues?

No disease issues for me as of yet. Had my first blossoms this spring, but lost them to frost. Only negative I guess so far is that it seems to be a relatively slow growing tree.

Mine are young also...on OHxF97 good growers so far with no issues. This will be their first spring getting a little triple 10.

The Johantorp gets some respect from Joseph Postman, curator at Corvallis. He's sampled over a thousand pears, and includes this one in a list of 18 of his favorites.

A very late ripening and cold-hardy pear widely grown in Sweden for winter storage. Hangs on the tree into the winter. “In a mild Corvallis winter, we can enjoy them directly off the tree in late December,” Postman said.

The link you shared is about the only review i have found about the pear, i'm guessing its just not that popular for growers since it is such a late pear. I ended up finding some scion from a guy on a facebook group.

I was successful at grafting Johantorp to this wild pear tree. Every graft took, this wild pear tree drops it's fruit early to mid August, then drops leaves shortly after, hopefully such a late pear will do ok on this tree, but I have my doubts. On the plus side I have rootstock on order.

Is anyone's Johantorp bearing this year?

I was able to cut scions off my Johantorp after it put on a fair amount of growth it's 1st year. I grafted 6. Hoping a few take.

I had 5 grafts take last year. Two on OHxF97 will be planted out next weekend. All my pears on other rootstocks need another year in the nursery including one Johantorp each on OHxF87, serviceberry and aronia. The serviceberry and aronia will be dwarfs for the backyard if they grow well enough this summer. In a month, I'll field graft an OHxF97 in my orchard with Johantorp too.

How did everyone's Johantorps do last year? Still liking what you see? Mine from TC is entering 3rd leaf after having a great 2nd growing season. I also have 1 in the nursery from last year's grafts that is awakened nicely.

I think the one I have in the ground was 2nd leaf this year. Definitely behind Kieffer that was planted the same year, but put on decent growth. Will be watching with interest.
