Is this fireblight? If so, it has gotten the leader of a Honeycrisp and of a Hewes Crab that I planted last year.

Afraid that would be my guess. If it is you need to cut the branch off 8 to 12 inches below visible infection soon and burn. Google it to learn more.
 
Yes it is. This is the worst year for it I have ever seen in my area.
