Any idea why he got smaller for a while? Was it environmental or possibly genetic?
Thanks. I appreciate you comments. Actually I think it fairly common for them to drop back a bit in middle age. They are in the breeding pool. Run themselves down really hard and sometimes haven’t recovered well before they grow their next set of antlers. Some of. Our very best bucks have been the ones that are becoming less aggressive with age and have the second big jump in antler growth somewhere between 7-10
Here is an interesting perspective. The field photo is the rack on a 270 lb whitetail . The next pic is what the rack looks like in front of a 150 lb skinny guy. While I was fairly sure the buck would be over 200" I underscored him in there field once again. I'm usually pretty accurate especially on inside spread but I missed this one by 3" Yet one more reason field scoring can be challenging.
