Well, I'm getting to the point where I need hearing aids. Digital hearing aids have a high db cutoff feature to protect you from loud noises. I've used commercial stuff like walker. They are fine for protection and general hearing when on the range or bird hunting. They don't work well to remediate hearing loss. If you turn up the gain, in increase the noise.
I'll soon be going to an audiologist for a hearing test and get hearing aids equalized for my hearing loss. I had one years ago and it worked well but I lost it. You can have several different programs of equalization for different situations. There is some research that suggests hearing loss increases more rapidly if it is not remediated with hearing aids. Evidently the part of one's brain used to interrupt language degrades when the stimulus from your ears is reduced. Getting hearing aids sooner verses later can slow the loss.
Perhaps not a direct answer to your question, but before you invest in a hunting/shooting specific product, make sure you don't need general hearing loss remediation. Hearing aids can serve both purposes. They are just as good as the commercial high db cutoff features in the hunting/shooting products, but the listening aspects are much superior. They are expensive though.
Thanks,
Jack
