Hack and Squirt and SMZ areas

I manage a tract of land that is made mostly of planted pines with hardwoods being found along the Stream Management Zones. These areas have a very dense canopy and are very open underneath. Has anyone used this technique to get more sunlight to these particular areas on your property?

Not SMZ’s in particular - but high density stem counts in general - yes. I have an area that was clearcut in 1997 and left to regen on its own. I included everything six inches and smaller in the Hack n Squirt contract. I could tell in a month it had done some good. Probably should have gone 8” and down, because I believe the workers cheated to the small side. You might get some financial help from nrcs
