Guide for Deer Apple Trees

In two weeks we're hosting our semi-annual meeting for our area hunters and we try to put together informational items for the attendees. The other night I typed up a "short" version and "long" version of a guide on apple trees for deer. I think the "short" version is what I'll use as a hand-out for the meeting as I don't want to provide too much information where most people won't take the time to read it. The shorter it is the more likely they are to read it.

Please check them out if you want and see if there would be anything you'd recommend me changing. This is intended for our local deer hunters to use which local is Zone 4 (1 hour North of Green Bay, WI).

I normally wouldn't put Yellow Transparent Apple on the list of recommended varieties, but the one we have on our property does amazing so I included it on the list. I tried to keep the list of recommended apple tree varieties as short as possible while still having enough options.

Very well done piece and I like your suggestions on varieties to plant. Nevertheless, it seems there is always one more variety we absolutely have to try - but they will learn that on their own. Nice introduction to apples!

The only addition that might be helpful would be rust resistance for those of us with cedars.

LHC = Loomis Hunting Community. It's basically a group to build relationships amongst neighbors. There is some momentum between some of the hunters to pass up more bucks, but it's not a QDMA type group. The #1 goal is building community, respect, and trust between neighbors which results in everyone enjoying hunting a whole lot more. I'll post more about our buck survey once we finalize the 2017 numbers and compare them to 2016 numbers. One thing that is interesting is that buck sightings and buck kill were down in our immediate area in 2017 compared to 2016; however, our trail cameras captured pictures of more bucks from 9/1/2017 - 11/30/2017 than they did a year prior for the same period. It's appears to be a good lesson that what we observe while hunting may not be representative to what is actually going on.

That sounds awesome. I wish more people were like that. I meet way too many neighbors, hunters, etc. who don't understand that people can work together synergistically to benefit everyone in the community. Too many people just have the mentality of "me first, screw everyone else."

Excellent presentation. If that don't "hook" some guys into planting apple trees nothing will.
