Golden Hornet Crab

Does someone have them in stock? All I have found is semi dwarf

Chummer - I don't blame you. Your country is tough up there and babying could be a full-time job. ^^^^ I hope your G.H. crab makes it. That would be a nice addition for you.

I pulled blossoms off of my GH the year I grafted it and again this year. It has not shown any CAR and is doing great.

When do these golden hornets drop?

Are you zone 3? How cold did you get last winter?

Mine were still holding last weekend, even after 5' of snow
Are they a kind of crab that eventually just dries or rots on the tree?or do they eventually fall, I am after varieties that drop from Christmas until about 2 weeks into January, that is when our flintlock season is.

There are many crabapples that are not used by wildlife. Many ornamentals are examples. Some small crabapples are used by birds and don't really make it to the ground and may not be used by deer if they do.

Thanks,

Jack

I am not sure first year I have had tree. Apples were a bonus. I tasted one and it was pretty damn good.

They are about the size of a nickel. I can see them being a great candy tree for the deer.

Mine started to drop about a month ago, but still have about half of the crop hanging.

I thought they were supposed to start dropping in Oct Nov, but none of mine are there yet to confirm.

My Golden Hornet crab on G-202 rootstock in the Home Orchard. I planted it in 2014. It's dropped about 1/3 of it's fruit so far. Planning on grafting a few on B118 for the wildlife orchards.

I'd love to get some flintlock season droppers but my guess is you need a bunch of varieties to have it covered. Being several months after growing season, it will be quite variable what drops when from year to year based on weather. On the other hand, anything still holding some apples will get checked frequently to see if any have fallen. I have tracked deer in fresh snow on State Game lands that went from isolated apple tree to the next.

Wow those trees really cleared off Cummings list after this thread started.

Anyone know of another source? Not many online nurseries even list them, and of course everyone that does is sold out.

If you graft your own you can get the scion for free from GRIN .

The other thing I'd mention is that I've never seen Golden Hornet available on the larger rootstocks that most of us typically use for wildlife. That is, even if Cummins had them available today, they'd likely have it on g.202 rootstock (I'm no expert, but I believe that will yield a ~8-10' tree that will need support.) That's fine for apple growers that are more interested in the late blooming characteristic of the variety, but perhaps not ideal for most wildlife guys.)

So, I think the options are (1) plant the g.202 tree and accept its characteristics, (2) graft onto a larger (b.118?) rootstock with scions from Grin or members of this site, or (3) plant the g.202 'deep' (burying the graft union) and hope you get a 'full-size' tree, or (4) all of the above!

Well I am new to the grafting game, as in I have never tried it or even thought about it. After reading all these posts the last week or so I am intrigued. I think I will give it a try.

I purchased 3 Golden Hornets on G222 from Cummins to be delivered in spring. Would you guys plant it below the graft and try to get a larger tree or leave it as is? Also, what are the risk of planting it below the graft?
Thanks

Two years ago, I put my GH on a dolgo seedling. Good or bad, I don't know, but it grew well and keeps trying to produce.
