Funky fungus

We found this growing in the back yard after some much needed rain. I am sure this area has roots from a dead ash that we cut down after the EAB attacked it.

I was afraid the new puppy might chew on it so I tried to remove it with a shovel. It was more of a goo than a solid mushroom type of fungus. After the inside was exposed to air, it turned a dark red that made it look even more sinister.

Edible?
12 hour happy trip?
Poison?

I have never seen anything like it.

I cant' say I've ever seen that in person or in a book. I'm puzzled.

I found it. Nicknamed dog vomit slime mold. Totally harmless.
