Fruit Trees and frost

Never heard of that one before

I can't picture that working. Anyone vouch for it? I think the water would just freeze.

Don't know but I will sure try it. Always have a few extra milk jugs and feed bag strings laying around. 30's this week after 80's last week

Don't have so much trouble with the apples and pears as with the plums I have recently started trying to fruit.

With apples and pears, 4 degrees can make the difference between a 10% and a 90% blossom kill. That's why a frost pocket can be so devastating.

Gonna get down to upper 20's tonight, freeze warnings are out. Local weather reports point out worries for budding / blooming fruit trees. And I'm located in the warm section of Pa. ---- Camp in northern mountains will be colder yet. Might not be a good year for apple trees up there. 🙁 Might be paying for last year's bounty.

Woke up with a heavy frost on the windshield yesterday. Pears are done blooming and have dropped their pedals. Apples and crabs are in full bloom. I'm hopeful...

my pears have a ton of blossoms on them. I sure hope I don't lose them.

The only way I could see something like that working is if you have a thermal sink to very slightly raise the temp. I would struggle to imagine it helping much for such a small volume if it is not heated from another source like an aquarium heater.

We were supposed to hit 25 last nt, but wundergorund showed 20 for my town and my weather station showed 22 when I woke up. Apples seem behind. Wonder what the pears were doing.

Painting the bucket black would be helpful. Sun would give it a little heat.

There is some merit to it, but wont steer a frost too hard.

I got a young orchard, kinda want the buds to not make it a few years to get some tree size.

Plan at home is to plug in a few electric fans overnight in the backyard. Sprikling water on trees has been done succesfully.

The ochard down the road from me is being bulldozed. They have like 100 of those orchard heaters just rotting by the road. The tree guy and the gearhead in me wants a few to play with.
