food plots in

5 year old buck +
On Saturday May 13 I texted my farmer to see if my food plots were in yet. He was locking my gate after just getting done with the job. I planted about 10 acres of RR soy beans and 5 acres of RR corn for the deer this season. All will be left up for the deer and turkeys to eat. My land is in the Town of Almond, Portage county WI. This area is referred to as the "Central Sands" country. My farmer used a wider no till planter this season, so there are a couple of places on my land that will need trimming so his equipment can get through tree lines on driveways. Two of my fields had greened up pretty good, so they got hit with 41% glyphosate (Buccaneer) on Monday. The rest of the fields are just bare dirt yet, so no need to spray them yet. No till planting is the way to go with food plots, if one can find a farmer in the neighborhood who has the necessary equipment and will bother with small areas of land to plant. 15 acres is nothing to farmers who plant 1,000 acres every season. My farmer leases my best 12 acre field for alfalfa and part of the lease deal is that he plant for me when he is done with all his plantings.
Now like every other person with seed in the ground, I am at the mercy of Mother Nature.

A buddy of mine from Wisconsin said they got some much needed rain yesterday (May 15th), so you are off to a good start. Good Luck with the 15 acres of turkey and deer food.

You're way ahead of me. To wet to plant anything. If it keeps up I'm going to be looking at fall plots.

Ya im kicking myself! Ive been dragging my feet doing other projects so I havent get my corn or beans in yet. Now I want to get to it and its just rain, rain, rain. I did get a few plots killed and planted in buckwheat. I really want to get that corn in asap!!!

I should still be ok for a little while yet huh.....

If your corn hasnt been planted yet you'll be fine. With the moisture and the increased average daytime temps with a little extra N your corn will catch up to the early planted stuff in a hurry.

I planted on May 12 last year and May 13 this season. I was fortunate this year in that there was a three day window in which my farmer got all his planting done. It sure does help to have an 18 foot wide no till planter.
