fishing reports

We just got back from sleeping in a ice house for 4 days fishing 24-7. It was a great time caught a lot of sauger and walleye. My son's goal was to catch a burbot. He caught this one at 2:30 a.m the mourning we were leaving. It was a great time.

Nice eelpout - did you keep it?

I think they are pretty good both boiled and dipped in butter as well as fried.

Yes we kept them. Boiled in 7 up 6 minutes. Then broiled with butter, garlic, and papirika. My son and I thought it was very good. They are some strange fish. Would be easy to clean if they weren't so slimy.

Burbot are a favorite of mine. They are the only freshwater species in the cod family. The anatomy is similar to cod, but the meat is not. The meat, and overall appearance of the fish, is more similar to cusk (Brosme brosme), which I catch a lot of here in Bergen.

The best way to clean them is to cut the skin around the fish behind the head, then use pliers to pull the skin off toward the tail. Then you have a skinless fish to filet. You'll get a loin, a tail section, and a thin piece of belly meat off each side. The belly meat I usually hot smoke and grind up to make dip. The other two sections can be used in any recipe that calls for a mild but meaty fish, like cusk or monkfish.

This time of year the females should have enormous roe sacs and livers. These can be utilized in various recipes if you are so inclined.

We went out yesterday on Lake Michigan out of oak Creek se WI. Heard the Browns were hitting. Ended up with 3 coho. Had a few others get off. Some of the best tasting salmon I ever had. What amazed me was fishing in 30 ft of water you could see the bottom. Between the clean water regs and the zebra mussels that water is clear. 25 years ago you couldn't see your lure 1 ft down.

Not fishing, but I opened the boat up enough today to remove the old name and port of call from the transom.
Spring is coming. Food plots may suffer this year.

To be replaced with a version of this. Don’t like the lettering, the guy is giving me a few more options.

Isn’t there some sort of old sailor ritual you’re supposed to do when you rename a boat? You know, the purging and renaming ritual? Otherwise I think it’ll sink.

This shit is real.

There is a long list.
It has to be in the water, but we’ll do it first thing. It’s an excuse to have a drink on the boat at the dock but just in case….

End of an era.. Selling her and getting out of the tournament bass fishing scene.

Hoping to spend more time part time farming and food plotting!

Details on the boat? You can PM me if preferred.

PM sent.

Logan backed out due to the wind and temps and have to say it got cold around daybreak. I had 3 big ones hooked but only landed one of them. Caught 17 total and all were released except this one. Ended up in 4th place with this 23" 6# 12oz rainbow. 3rd was 7.1, 2nd was 7.9 and first was 8 something.

Beautiful trout. That's one good day of fishing.

The kid wasn't to happy I went out on Lake Michigan while he was in school last week. My friend and I let him reel in most of fish this day. The Browns were really hitting. We threw one really big brown back. We kept 6 Browns 1 coho and lost 2 at the boat.

Youth Trout Day this past Saturday. My seven year old son has now caught a bigger trout than I ever have and a Palomino to boot. Don't mind his face. My dad didn't wait until he was smiling to take the pic.
