First Deer

5 year old buck +
Vivian harvested her first deer October 10, 2024 to kick off the 3rd season of senior deer hunts at Baptist Homes & Healthcare Ministries. Following classroom training in conservation, hunting ethics and deer biology, participants practiced shot-placement with their weapons before being transported to easy access blinds. Two hours into the hunt, Vivian posted the first harvest in what is a five hunt schedule. This was the first year the hunts have expanded to include healthcare workers. Vivian is the director of housekeeping for the campus.

Volunteers from First Baptist Church, Viburnum (MO) and Deer Creek Baptist Church, Cuba (Mo) served as mentors. We were blessed to have Outdoor Hall of Fame inductee Bill Cooper (from Deer Creek Baptist) as a volunteer for this event. Congratulations, Vivian!

Yes. As part of the experience, she helped field dress the deer. The pastor and volunteers from FBC Viburnum processed the deer completely, including vacuum packing. We also connect them with recipes and serve venison meals during the experience that totally overcome any concerns that venison is “gamey” or “bad.”

We maintain a list of employees who would like venison as well. For many, this supplement makes a big impact on their bottom line.
