Fall Apple Porn

Grown from seed that was planted over twenty years ago. It has never had any spray as you can tell and is growing

Pretty SmallChunk, Rogers Red Mac?

Kerr taste MUCH better when they are fully ripe. I sampled one 2 weeks earlier and it was REALLY tart. Yesterday these were very good for fresh eating.

Black Oxford, I was very tempted to pick one and had to seriously restrain myself from doing so but i'm going to give them a little longer. While the color is looking good, not quite as dark as my avatar yet.

Maya - Thanks for the info & pix of the Macouns. We lost internet service for a few days, so I couldn't respond sooner. You said you'd have a few more bushels for market next week. Do you sell at a local farmer's market or roadside stand? ( just curious. My wife & I are big fans of locally grown ANYTHING, & love farm markets & roadside stands. )
Bur - Those crabs look good. Is the Morse bunches the red version that is still turning red, or is it the yellow version? ( they look yellow-orange in the pic. ) Also, what is the crab in the pic growing in the tags?

Yes Bows, I do both a farmers market and have a roadside stand. I always pick the day before and post it on a chalk board, "fresh picked last night". People love it!

Very cool! If we lived closer, we'd be stoppin' !! Nothing like local grown.

I think it is the red version that is just turning colors. Those Morse bunches must be grown from seed and they show a tremendous variation in apple size, drop time, and hardiness.

The apple growing in the tags is a seed apple from my wife's grandma. The other crab also grows wild in the reed canary/tags- the swamp crab.

Gosh maya, I actually am not even 100% sure if it is a Macintosh. My grandpa planted the two small orchards back when they moved to the farm in the late 50's. All she remembered that was planted was Macintosh and Paula Reds. Well after looking after her trees for the last three years and looking into the varieties of the trees, it turns out that the Paula Reds are a type of Mac, if I'm not mistaken? So I'm guessing that's what these are. There are only two types of trees in both orchards and I am just guessing that the other tree is a Haralson. Total guess tho! What do you think? This was one of the bigger apples on the tree and they are now probably over ripe but the deer don't mind! :D

Puala Red mature about two weeks before Mac. Red over green/ yellow like Mac but you will see some small yellowish speckles on them. They cook down even more mushy than Mac, sauce only. I don't grow any, but a friend of mine does for early market. Kinda foolish to do that anymore when there are Zestar!s to be grown for a good all around apple imo.

Bur - The swamp crab and the GrandMa's apple in the tags look like gold mines to me. If they grow well for you up there in the North country, their lineage ought to be kept going either by you or one of the other Minnesota apple/habitat guys. ( grafting ) Maybe you could name it / them?? " Sandbur special " , " Art's crab " , " The Swamper " ? I bet you'd have a lot of interest - especially from cold-country guys. Very impressive trees given your climate.

Redcort from Boyer Nursery and the local Conservation District Its a variant of Cortland and its huge and the only apple on the tree in year 2 . Yea I know you aren't supposed to let them have fruit in year 2 but I am eating this sucker and I forgot to label the trees so now I know the variety of this tree LOL Ed those black oxfords looking good I cant wait until the ones I grafted from your scions are producing fruit Love that colorredcort.jpg

My Macouns on September 2nd They are really big no about the size of Wolf River over half of them wow

Aero, is the Redcort tree itself kinda wimpy? Mine are very weak growers. They spit out huge apples though.

This is year 2 fror the tree and it doesn't seem whimpy but I guess time will tell. I got these fro local co op and they are from Boyer Nursery which I have been happy with my trees from these guys who are down near Adams County Nursery
