Early tree planting this spring?

I’m starting to wonder if this isn’t one of those years where I’m gonna be planting trees a month early?

It really makes me anxious about stock that ain’t gonna ship until mid May.

I would guess so ? I’ll be planting soon.

I think it would depend on your tree seedling source. I usually use the MN or WI dnr nursery source for large purchases and those are grown in state and pulled the same spring they are shipped. On warm springs the seedlings would arrive a little earlier, but on cold years they would ship later.

Late April is typically when my trees arrive, but I would be OK if they arrive a little earlier than that this year based on the extended forecast that looks pretty warm.

I believe pick up for local swcd county tree sales is April 24th. Same as it always is.

We just got our first glimpse of grass since Thanksgiving. Won't be planting here any time soon.

And just like that, the ground it covered again. 60 deg yesterday, 26 today.

I tried getting a start on holes today. Got 13 holes in and the further up I got on the hill, the closer the frost was to the surface. Really strange. Finally got so hard I had to stop. By the way, when you get tired using an earth auger, don't try to flip it and use the throttle with your left hand. It will rip your arm off, hit you in the crotch, and the exhaust grate will burn through your pants and underwear. Don't ask me how I know...😬IMG_3814.jpg

What kind of trees are you planting in that ag field?

Did you plant trees today?? Personally I am not a fan of pre digging the holes. Will you be able to drive up and water the new trees once they are planted?? Your soil looks dry.

How long does it take to auger a hole?? I have debated getting one of these augers, but I have LOTS of tree roots in my woods. I am not so sure it would work with out killing me. Using one of these augers kinda sounds like dating a hair dresser... Don't ask me how I know.

I'm planting Norway Spruce. Have 200 coming from the county first week of April. Creating borders on this field that will be converted to switch and bedding. Just trying to get ahead of the curve. I have a big spring ahead. And yes I built a watering rig for the back of my SXS. I'll push the dirt back in the holes more then likely. It probably only took about 20 seconds per hole. Would be even faster with no frost.

I've used a double-handle-bar, 2-man auger to drill holes and your arms will tell you it wern't fun! That's why I like direct seeding acorns/chestnuts. When done correctly - (protection, competition elimination and mulch) - weather during the next 6-8 weeks is largely irrelevant. And, with proper care, they will catch up to seedlings within 5-6 years or, in some cases, surpass them

Too cold here in central WI yet, we still have a few feet of frost and it's froze pretty good every night. Not sure I could get a shovel in more than a couple inches.

Wish I could get holes done that fast in my woods. Sometimes I have to chop away at tree roots with my Wolverine. That really wears your ass out. I'd love to plant in an open field like that someday. I bet you can really haul ass. I like to wear my leather knee pads when tree planting.

I bet it does! I'm fortunate in the fact that there's plenty of open ground. Also unfortunate in that equals zero wildlife holding cover. I'll try and do a play by play on the planting on the land tour page when I get the trees here.

Soil could be quite a bit lighter in color up on that hill top. Even thru the residue the darker lower stuff has probably been catching that ever increasing sun height. Getting some warmth in it. Just lobbing out a guess lol.
