Dolgo spacing

Black Swamp

5 year old buck +
How far apart should I put my dolgo crab apples. I will be putting in a single row 175 yards long

I would say 20-25 feet apart, depending on rootstock.

With wind pollinated trees like Chestnuts, spacing can impact production. With insect pollinated trees like apples, you don't really have this consideration. Things to consider when deciding on spacing:

1) Crown interference at maturity. This is based on the level of dwarfing rootstock.
2) Equipment access. Depending on the size of your mowing equipment, you may want more or less space to make mowing easier.
3) Hunting considerations. Several groups of more closely space trees with space between each group can make hunting easier.
4) Disease and insect damage. In some cases more space between trees can reduce both.

Just some things to think about...

Thanks,

Jack

Thanks jack these will be about 60 yards from my house my wife wants a "pretty" tree but I want it to have deer value to. It will line the entire front of our property.

Does anyone have a good place to get dolgo's?

Buy some rootstock from cummins nursery and you can get scions from us on here. If you live close enough to one of us on here, we can probably graft them for you or teach you how to graft.

Seedlings full size

Okay, I don't even want to go into what all that may entail. Hopefully somebody else who's interested in educating does.
?

A seedling apple is by definition standard full size. But full size varies a lot. Some seedlings will be natural dwarfs and some will be vigorous. Now, dolgo seedlings might all end up about the same size...or not. Depends on what the pollen sources were.

Apples are not true to seed in general. When you plant seeds, the tree you get can be quite different from the parent. It is said that Dolgo crabapples are more true to seed than many apples but it is still a roll of the dice. As chickenlittle says, generally seedlings produce full size trees. There are advantages to using clonal rootstock in many cases, but I'm growing a lot of crabapples from seed. I plan to leave a branch of the seedling and graft above it. This will give me a full size tree with known fruiting characteristics but will also let me see what kind of apples the seedling eventually produces. If I like their characteristics, I'll use that branch for scions to graft to other seedlings.

I would suggest semi-dwarf or full size grafted trees for wildlife purposes.

Best of Luck,

Jack
