Plain gly will kill it deader than a doornail. No need to get fancy.

^^^^I am having to kill mature switch grass that is crowding and growing in my apple tree cages. Gly is completely nuking the SG.

I have an area that has switchgrass. I am looking to kill part of it and allow fallow/early succession forbs to grow in certain areas of it. Any advise for the steps to achieve this? I though about using herbicide probably imazapyr

You may also think about discing a few strips or paths in it during the dormant season. The discing will set the SG back and the soil disruption will expose the native seed bank for the following spring.

I would disk it right now. Late summer disturbances generally favor forbs. They will be green and growing yet this year.
