disc maintenance

Powder

5 year old buck +
I'm not sure if this is the best place to ask this but I'm hoping it is.

I was able to purchase a used disc today and one of the front notched blades is loose and wobbles. What would cause this and how can I fix it?

This the fist disc I've owned so I really don't know much about the maintenance. Any help would be appreciated.

Congratulations on the purchase. Not sure what brand you got and how the gangs are set up but could be a faulty bearing or spacer. If at some time that particular disc was replaced, maybe it simply wasn't reassembled properly. Definitely take the time to repair it now as the metal-on-metal wallowing around will just get worse with use.

When I first got mine years ago, I remember having to check nuts and lock washers a few times.

most older disc, use square axle tubed the disc ride on, and IF the square hole in the center of the disc is NO longer square, like rounded out, its going to be that way, NO real way to fix, without making future issue's
as ONLY good way would be to WELD it onto the axle, and then when time comes to replace it or rest of disc, its going to be a pain to grind them welds off MAYBE< pending what tools you have?

Better idea most likely would be, buy a new disc, and just remove that old wobbly one, there NOT hard to take apart to be honest.
AG supply sells most common sized one, just try and get GOOD quality made one's, of GOOD steel, the gauge of thickness, here helps, thicker tend to be stronger, but you only have SO much extra room on the axle and fitting, so, measure what you have now an dn see if you have extra space to maybe get a thicker one??

and sorry,
as for maintenance, best advice here is GREASE the heck out of it before EVERY use and AFTER every use, this way nothing sits inside a bearing or hinge point(metal on metal point OIL well before each use and after as well!
IT will extend the life of your disc by YRS if you do this!

also, don't go TOO fast when disc'ing, it not a race, just fast enough so they sort of clean out and IF you see or know big HARD rocks are ahead SLOW DOWN and or even LIFT up down force , its things that don't give like big rocks that damage disc's and there blades!

Grease and oil and try to keep out of the weather as reasonably as possible. I use one that sat outside for nearly 20 years under a tarp and it works just fine. The blade wobble is more than likely as MRBB stated either the square hole isn't square anymore or the blade is bent. Tearing it apart and replacing is the best way to fix it. Most farm retail stores sell replacement blades.

Some items to check

Bad bearing, pick the disk gang off the ground and rotate and push around. If u see any slop by bearing hanger thats the problem

Bearing spacer between gangs has cracked or flanged ends broke. If not too bad yet, can retight gang locknut and use for a little bit but gonna crap out completely sometime

Disk has cracked around the area where it is clamped. Basically creating a donut mostly free spinning on your gang

Gang locknut has backed off. Very unlikely considering rust and dirt binding stuff up on old equipment but tighten back up and use a cheater bar

If your disk is a KK angle iron frame one, 90% chance bad bearing sleeve. The other 10% chance is multiple bad bearings at once. Need to grease these things every use and twice on Sundays

Sorry for not replying earlier, busy day at work.

Here is a picture of it. I believe it's a king cutter. Thanks for the tips. I'll have to look at taking it apart to fix it right. I won't need it for a month or so.

We've got a KK Atv disc. Our disc had the nuts on the end of each gang back off slightly, which caused the discs not to rotate and cut as they should. We bought some large washers, removed the nuts on each gang and reinstalled with an additional washer. Problem solved.

I ordered the kk bearings online from rural king. Cheaper than tsc at the store. Check the other gangs while you are at it. You may find other things just starting on the opposite side. I think a bearing is like 35 bucks. Its been a few years.

You need to tighten the nut up on the end. If you ever take the gang apart make sure you power wash everything before it goes back together. Any dirt on the spacers or blades will cause it to loosen up when you start using it again. If you run it with loose blades for long it will round out the blade or the axle. Easy fix if you have a welder. Just build up the axle if it is wore so it fits tighter again. I don't know if they carry many parts for your disk but SHOUP has alot of anything you will need.

Had to replace bearings a couple of times on my disc---not a lot of fun but not rocket science either. Finally set the gangs as straight as they would go and holding up much better now. I have notched blades on front and rear of the disc.
