Diesels

5 year old buck +
How easy are older diesels to take care of ? Thinking about picking up an older John Deere 430 that is po driven. No hour meter but they claim runs great. Price seems ok at 3k

Price is ok, not great. Look at parts for that thing. 32 years old, it gonna leak, or leak soon. In that sized tractor, I prefer gasoline. Look around for $500-700 bucks you can buy a whole new engine.

I just scooped up a case 444. hydrostatic with a 14hp kholer. Can put a new motor and pto pump in there for under $1000 if I need too.

Tires cost money too.

Far as food plotting goes, not much different than an ATV, possibly better. You get the speed down for implements. That may have rear hitch you can weld up a basic set of S tine harrows. Sometimes called danish harrows. Does it have a bucket? You can always use it a year and probably sell it for the same or profit. Assuming its in good shape and has some implements. Alone in good shape, its a fair deal. $2500 would be better.

A few more bucks you have have alot bigger john deere tractor in 2wd. You can always find an ok 6ft finish mower for $500 or so.

Small oddball stuff you need to rebuild gets quick fast. I rebuilt the diff on a suzuki 230 atv. for the same price I could of rebuilt the diff and motor if it was a morre popular honda.

Good info, ty

Get to know any specific model well. For something that old, you should know all possible issues. For example, some of the 400 series had a plastic cam gear issue. Then, if you're considering one, make sure you know the service history. You want to know what you're getting into.

Price seems high based on TractorForum comments. I'm with RGriz, unless you are a good diesel engine guy and know you can get parts nearby, you could be buying a whole lot of frustration. Missing hour meter makes me nervous.

If you still are serious about it, offer $1200 and be ready to walk away.

Most of the older equipment has broken hour meters. If you know anyone who works on older equipment ask their opinion but also try to feel them out to see if they are brand loyal to certain brands. I know several guys who brag up whatever they currently own and complain about any other brand. Find someone who can give you an unbiased opinion. Be leary if it has been painted recently in my opinion.

always look in the tool box.

That kid knows more than most adults I know when it comes to common sense.

If I was buying an used 2wd i would look at something like a 4020 that theres a bunch of to be able to find parts
