How old is that tree?

I didn’t record the year I planted. I have since started a journal for recording these things.

But I think it’s 3 years old now.

It’s only about 3 foot tall.

I had one at 4-5’ produce also great little trees several of mine this year are pretty loaded with acorns looking like a mast year for me.

I direct seeded a bunch of DCO’s this past spring in some cleared wood lots. I’m looking forward to seeing what they produce in a few years.

Side note: I read on FB Don Higgins saying he didn’t care for them because they yield low mass. I’m curious what everyone’s experiences with them have been. They are native to my area but I haven’t ever really seen any in the “wild.” I’m hoping they will provide some mass until the taller varieties I planned start producing.

They are small trees so no they don’t produce tons of mast they do however grow and thrive where most trees wouldn’t. I cleared 12 acres at my home place about 15 years ago maybe closer to 20 years and planted it back to native grasses and forbs. In some places it was mostly rock with very little soil at all and the trees that thrived in those rocky places have been the DCO’s and I didn’t even plant them. There must of been one or two there to start with that I didn’t clear been to many years now I don’t recall but I wouldn’t have cut any oaks I came across that much I know. Since the clearing DCO have done pretty well in the rocky poor soil areas. To put this into perspective at my place the same areas where prickly pear cactus will grow so will DCO. So I do like them but if I had all deep fertile soil types maybe I’d go a different path.

I love this tree

I can get it to grow in east texas ,produces early and most importantly tolerates our summer heat/drought
