Cutting slabs

I think I've posted pics of the barn before somewhere on the site. It's a fun place to go hang with the guys, have poker night, watch sports, or just talk chestnuts/habitat/deer over a nice pour or cigar. If anyone is ever in the KC area and has time to waste, send me a note. I always enjoy meeting new folks with similar interests.

I cut slabs from time to time. Used them in the barn when building a hangout for the fellas. Built whiskey shelves out of the slabs, and used some 12 ft slabs on whiskey barrels for high top tables.View attachment 90993

I used 3/4 plywood to build the sled it works ok if I did a lot of this type of thing I might build or buy a better one but for an occational slab project every 10-15 years it’s fine. Who knows I may do more of it after retirement. I love to build furniture but it takes up so much room there has to be a need for it in the house sometimes I build it a give it away because I’m really more interested in the building than the using.

That's my deal now - retired. I like building - just to build heavy, slabby furniture. I'll try to outfit our sons, then maybe sell a few pieces. I love working with wood - but not the museum-level, delicate, French castle type furniture. I like making things out of distressed (or I'll distress it) heavy wood. That way, if someone dings or scratches a piece I've made, they can sand lightly, rub on some Armor Seal, Waterlox, or home-brew of finish to just "add to the character" of the piece. I really like wood with circular sawmill marks still in it - like our fireplace mantel. Big white oak slab I finished myself.
